Shatner Set For Two-Episode Guest Stint?
TrekToday.com ^ | August 9, 2004

UPN has reportedly commissioned advertisements touting William Shatner's (James T. Kirk) return to Star Trek.

CBS Television City Research Center, located in Las Vegas's MGM grand hotel, is showing a commercial for Enterprise's fourth season announcing a guest appearance by Shatner, according to a post by 'Lt. Barclay' on the TrekWeb message boards.

Barclay said in his report that the center previewed an episode of CBS's new comedy series, Centre of the Universe, for visitors. "During the show, a few UPN commercials were shown, including one for Enterprise," he said in his report. The Enterprise ad reportedly contained scenes from season three, followed by a Star Trek logo and a voice over announcing that Shatner would be appearing in two episodes this season.

Rumours about Shatner making the trek to Enterprise have circulated since the series premiere in fall 2001, but have picked up steam in recent months. Back in May, executive producer Rick Berman said the writers were looking for a way to bring Shatner on board Enterprise. In June, it was reported the actor approached Berman with a "great story idea" for a guest stint (story). The only stumbling block at that time was that Shatner is signed as a regular on ABC's new drama series, Boston Legal, and would require time off to appear on Enterprise.

The CBS Television City Research Center is a joint initiative between Viacom, the parent company of CBS and UPN, and ACNielsen, which provides television ratings data. The complex includes screening rooms fitted with touch screens so visitors can give instant feedback on the programs as they are watching them.

Please note that this information has yet to be confirmed by UPN or Paramount Pictures and until such time you should treat it as you would any rumour from an unofficial source. The original post can be found here at the TrekWeb forums.

He's also a two-time Emmy Award nominee. The Shatner has some acting chops when he wants to.

Not surprising. When will Q or the Borg make appearances?

Apart from the occasional good episode, Enterprise kinda blows.

'5 Year Mission' is a collosal 'fan wank' that is laughably bad. I remember getting word of it a year or more ago and the whole idea has looked 1/2 baked since its inception.

Just leave TOS alone - it's the only Trek worth watching, and even by that standard, Season 1 & 2 are strong and Season 3 is weak. That being said, I'd rather watch a poor Season 3 episode than most of the stuff done in recent years in the Trek family.

Very true--Attuma wields a deadly tripod:

Weapons: Attuma customarily carries a three-pronged iron sword weighing approximately 50 pounds.

They're still groping for the Prime Directive, so they avoid all of those Frenchy-PC Picardian hand-wringings.

Yep. They have replaced it with a whole new breed of hand wringing. Enterprise is awful.

By all means then, don't watch the show. Unless you LIKE to watch shows that you don't enjoy, of course.

I sense an invisible /sarcasm tag lurking in your reply...

;-)

Seriously, why do "Star Trek" threads always bring in all the "Star Trek [insert series] Sucks" folks? Do you watch Enterprise? If so, why, if it is not to your liking? If not, how do you know the show sucks?

I'm not fond of "Andromeda", but I don't drop in on Andromeda threads to complain.

I'm not the posting police, and you can obviously express whatever sentiment you wish. I just don't understand the motivation.

Sorry if I ticked you off. I'd rather shatter Kerry's campaign in November than get into flame wars over Star Trek.

No... that was a Picard episode, I'm certain. ;-)

Of course, looking back at the late 1960s, one might get the wrong impression. It's a very common "error in time", it happens to everyone. Even General Trelane (retired) has been tripped-up by the space-time continuum... thing.

I like the commercials but the whole thing with his drowned wife made me sick. And I loved the old campy original show.

In the 911 call that was played for the media, he is saying that his wife is at the bottom of the pool! The 911 operator tells him to go in and get her out, and he equivocates. I can't remember the exact words, but it was like "But I have my clothes on" or something!!!! "Oh, OK, OK, I will go in."

He wasn't in town at the time and had just returned home.

Well, not a week later, I saw him early in the morning (9 am) in a L.A. deli and I couldn't believe my eyes. He had his hat pulled over his head (too early to fix that toupee) and his companion was scantily clad with long brown hair very mussed. Let me just say that Captian Kirk did not appear to be grieving. A year later I saw a photo of him with his new girlfriend, and that was indeed the lady I saw him with.

Hey friend,

First of all, 'peace.' I am a wisecracker in life, so yes there was a sardonic thread in my last reply! Please don't take it personally. :-)

In any event, I am a longtime trek fan. I was born in '68 and discovered the program in my youth in syndication on Ch. 11 in NYC. I had the pleasure of attending many of the conventions as a youngster with my dad in nyc, from around 1975-76 through the early 80s, along with comic cons.

For me the fandom was best at around that time - all we had was the TOS in syndication, some books and magazines, and a dedicated fan base. The arrival of Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 was incredible - I remembver vividly the excitement that year as the movie was released. Though widely considered a clunker, it remains one of my fave Trek films.

I have a strong bias for TOS, but even then, Season 1 and 2 were good, but Season 3 was pretty rough.

As fandom grew, and TNG got off the ground, I was excited to see it. I tuned in a bit - it wasn't Star Trek, to me anyway. The two-fisted style was gone. The stories seemed to me to be obvious retreads of TOS stories or themes. The cast was too big and most were a bore. I lost interest, but would tune in on occasion.

Same with the later Trek TV projects. DS9 never clicked with me, Voyager was ok and had the benefit of a stronger captain, but neither sustained my interest.

I continued to support the Trek films: I like Trek 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8. The last 2 Trek movies were unwatchable, in my book, down to dune buggies in space in one of the strangest scenes in SF movies ever.

Enterprise had some promise, but I questioned at the time how they could pull it off? The tech would have to have a 'retro' feel, vis a vis TOS. It didn't. Within the first few minutes of the pilot, we saw a modern era Klingon. I threw up my hands - they blew it, they lost me before the 2 hour pilot movie was over. Be it their angst ridden and indecisive captain, the 'UN' style of the crew, looking to shoehorn many races in, or the rip off of TOS stories and themes, the show just wasn't 'Trek' to me.

So I am probably a different breed of the modern Trek-basher - a provincial and protective fan of TOS, where Kirk & crew used their wits and their fists as need be. Kirt wasn't paralyzed bty indecision, and starfleet women showed off their pretty legs in those miniskirts. Modern day catsuits aside, I go with TOS.

So maybe that explains where I am coming from, and might give you some perspective on my mindset. In any event, I am a fan, just an oldschool and critical one.

So peace - live long and prosper. I'll go enjoy and ep or 2 of TOS on my DVD collection - yes, they saw me coming a mile away! New $ 100 boxed sets are coming out, but I bought them 2 vols at a time at $10-15 a pop. My Trek pedigigree! ;-)

Well, I've got to go, so I'll catch up with you later (tomorrow?). Good to know you have at least a little interest in the show. (hahahahahaha!)

The real test, can you sign "Live Long and Prosper"? BOTH hands? (I can!) *blushing*
