Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Okay, Corin needs some specific reading recommendations for the beach week. I'll be finishing up
The Hitchhiker's Guide before I go.
What I currently have to take with me:
- The Bible ~prolly won't get the whole thing read in a week...
- Deliver Us From Evil ~ Sean Hannity
- The Chronicles of Amber
- One Minute Millionaire~Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen
It's pretty ambitious to think I'll get through all of that, but I want them with me.
What I'm missing is history. I usually either go for biography or good historical fiction that captures the particular time period. That's a pretty wide area, but any suggestions?

Is this curriculum different from the BobJones stuff they're doing on Satellite, or are these the books you need to go along with the videos?

How about that book Newt Gingrich wrote?
Gettysberg?
I've only heard great thing about that one and its sequel Grant Comes East.
Historical fiction.

Mostly post Middle Ages Europe or post Civil War America.
It's one of my problems with history in Virginia schools when I was growing up. Virginia history was Jamestown thru the Civil War with a week at the end of the year for everything after. U.S. History was Jamestown thru the Civil War...you get the point.
It's Bastille Day, so I've got the Les Miserables CD playing. (I know it's about the French. So sue me.) But even though I've read the book, I'm still fuzzy on how that all fits together.
I've spent some time reading about the Crown Heads of Europe and how they're all interrelated (a good number being Victoria's grandchildren).
But, alas, outside of Virginia, I am woefully ignorant.
I ain't all that bright here even...

Ron's a little too recent. I've read several things about him.
I generally make it a personal rule not to read biographies of the living, cause the story ain't finished yet. I've made a few exceptions.
Hmmmm...I could do the third one in Robert Caro's series on LBJ...

Historical fiction isn't something I read much...I still haven't recovered from my dislike of history as a school subject. I should get past that...
This isn't really fiction...but I know my siblings thought the memoirs of Joseph Plum Martin were fascinating. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and wrote about it afterwards. It's probably not completely accurate since it was so many years later...so maybe it qualifies? I haven't read it, but it's called Private Yankee Doodle.

Looks interesting. I could get it used on Amazon.
Maybe I should do something Outer Banksish...either pirates or the Wright Brothers...

I thought of Ron because I had just read Caro's LBJ series recently and had Presidential bios on my mind :) Caro is a good read in that area, and also Kenneth Davis' bio of FDR, David McCullough's bio of Truman, and Stephen Ambrose's bios of Eisenhower and Nixon.

good historical fiction that captures the particular time periodI'm sure Rose and Alkhin would recommend the Aubrey & Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian, aka the "Master and Commander" series. The first book is actually titled "Master and Commander".

I've read the first two in Caro's series about LBJ. As much as I love Reagan, I kinda lived through a lot of that. So I'd like something less familiar.
