Yes, girls as young as 8 or 9 are menstruating. Ages 10 or 11 is becoming the norm instead of 12. Some people blame animal growth hormones in the food, but it could just be better food and health in general.I read somewhere about the relationship between stress and the onset of menstration. It stated that in situations where girls are exposed to higher levels of stress or violence, that they begin having periods sooner. The study was a comparison of average age of onset of menstruation of girls in inner cities versus suburbs. The theory is that it has survival value for humans in general, such that during long periods of bad times the reproduction of the next generation can be speeded up, thereby increasing the population and subsequently the chance of survival. I would extrapolate on this and further postulate that violent entertainment could have some effect on these trends.

Dan, I am friends with a woman who was raped and who carried the child to term. She was a young woman at the time. I have seen first hand the trauma that she endured yet she still gave this child life. So, I don't even agree with abortion in cases of rape. I have seen that good can come from the bad.
We aren't talking about a woman here. We are talking about a 9 yo little girl for goodness sake.

IIRC, Catholics tend to favor the life of the child over the life of the mother, and Protestants are less strict about allowing the unborn child to be sacrificed in order to save the mother's life.I am a Catholic, it's not quite that cut-and-dried.
Basically, we view that someone who willingly and knowingly risks her life to save the life of her unborn baby as showing the highest degree of love, and the highest form of living in imitation of Christ.
The problem here is whether this girl can consent to this danger, whether she has truly reached the level of understanding needed to make this decision freely.

I really do think I understand your feelings. Let me try just one more approach:
You're saying, "Okay, it's one thing with a mature woman... but this is a mere child! She shouldn't have to suffer like that!"
Your argument then is that this child should be all the more protected, because she is younger than your friend, or other adult rape victims.
What about the baby? The baby is STILL YOUNGER than the rape victim! Wouldn't your same line of argument suggest that (s)he should receive EVEN MORE protection, rather than being poisoned, burned to death, or dismembered, merely for having a miserable bastard for a father?

Oh, so because her body has matured and she is physically able to conceive, that means that it is "natural" for her to carry a child as a woman would? Pregnancy and childbirth affect more than just the body. They affect the mind as well.
This child has already endured a violent act against her. I would not subject her to pregnancy or childbirth and further damage her body and mind. This little girl should be playing with her baby dolls and tea sets and dreaming of what she wants to be when she grows up. She should not be having to endure the hell she is most likely in physically and mentally. I'm sorry. I know in my hear how I feel about abortion. I have always believed that it is murder in any case unless the mother is in danger of immediate death. I have also always applied these beliefs to grown women. Not little 9 year old girls.

I'm not offering an opinion on the abortion issue.
Usually onset of menses is the end of growth for a female.
Her 9 year old size is probably her optimum growth.

Yeah, he's an illegal. And the Republic won't mention that even if they knew. ALL of the Mexican ice cream "vendors" pushing their dirty carts around the streets of Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, San Diego, Tucson etc are illegals -- if they had visas, they wouldn't be doing that.
Anyway, here's a link: Yup, he's an illegal

Don't worry about cats and trees; the cats always get down on their own. Trees are not full of cat skeletons.I know, so how come the taxpayer has to pay to get them down?

As I said, I am not even regarding the father. I am thinking ONLY of the 9 year old girl. Dan, can you honestly say that it is in the best interest of this little girl to carry this child? What of the potential risks to her own health? What of the potential risks to the baby? I am sorry but this is not as cut and clear as you make it out to be. Sadly, either way, an innocent child is suffering.

I have never heard that before. Can you provide some medical citations of that?

Upon reading this headline, I immediately thought of a line from the movie, "The Warriors."

July 1, 2004 -- 7 am PDT -- [Re Ice cream truck driver accused of impregnating girl, 9 -- Associated Press/Arizona Republic, July 30, 2004] -- Yep, he's ILLEGAL. Keep me anonymous, please, but he was just returned to Mexico one year ago (voluntary return.) -- The mother should SUE the city for issuing an illegal alien a vendor's permit (if he even bothered to get one.) -- Received from an Arizona law enforcement officer. This is just great.

I am thinking ONLY of the 9 year old girl. That may the problem. There is another life at stake. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
Dan, can you honestly say that it is in the best interest of this little girl to carry this child?
I don't know that anyone can answer that. However, it's very clear to me that it IS in the best interest of the smaller child that her mother does carry her to term.
