Mother Accused of Killing Baby Sought Aid

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Horrified motorists sprang from their cars Friday to stop a woman who was repeatedly slamming her 7-month-old daughter onto a concrete sidewalk, police said. The baby later died of massive head trauma.

Kirsten Vanderlinde, 36, who receives mental health care as an outpatient, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Melissa Vanderlinde-Berst.

Police had checked on Vanderlinde twice shortly before the attack. A neighbor said she had called a crisis intervention center two days earlier, after Vanderlinde, fearing she was a bad mother, asked her to take custody of the child.

Witnesses said a woman wearing a nightgown and slippers was holding the baby by her ankles Friday morning and chanting: "Where's my TV? Where's my phone? Where's my peace? Where's my nice home? Where's my justice?"

Definitely a liberal, blaming her baby for her misfortune. I just cannot understand even a crazy person doing this.

The woman was also receiving mental health treatment and had at least 2 police calls on her. Yeah. the nanny state in action. Works so well.

Exactly! They should have keyed in on this and put the infant first by placing it in care until they figured out this womans problem. We live in a me-first throwaway society. Life didn't work out for this woman like it did on TV and she goes beserk.

The only good thing in this story is that at least someone tried to stop her when they witnessed her hurting the baby instead of sitting there watching. Everything else is a total mess.

That's what I was thinking. But on the other hand, a nutty woman comes to you. You take the baby and then she accuses you of stealing her baby. Who are the authorities going to believe? I think this neighbor did the right thing by alerting authorities if she didn't have the guts to take the baby. So sad.

Thats the only thought I can live with. But when I see these cases, what REALLY horrifies me is, what is going thru the childs head that his/her mother is hurting them. Mothers are supposed to be the only one who would never hurt them.
