The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Maybe I'll name it Freeper:)

Reminds me I need to get the calendar out and figure when it will be here if this breeding works.

The last time she foaled, which was actually her first baby, she was one day earlier then the ideal pregency date. I've read they will usually stay close to that one each one.

Anyway 342 days from now would make her due between next May 8-12. It could be 20 days + or - of these dates.

That's a good time, at least up here, for mild weather!

Dot was born on May 23. So we're almost at the same time. It was a good time.

Hey HOTD, not much longer now huh? :')

AAM, I got the spurs! (Wales). Funny thing is there were not any directions. I guess they figure if you have to ask.... lol. I'll be darn if I was going to ask either. I got my books down and figured it out:')

What's happened since last week with yall? As for me, I spent this week trying to fix something I broke. Okie was balking and I put his long curb chain on and then didn't take it off when I tied him to the wash rack. Two kids playing frisbee in the back pasture (1 my grandson:'( ). Yep, they sent it Okies way and he spooked. Eddie and I have worked all week to de-bomb him but we did it.

I'm on my way to Houston in the morning to pick up my granddaughter. 400 dollars R/T for her and her Mom. 1000 to Brownsville. I don't think so. I'll really try to post some pictures by next Friday. I'm going to be very busy with Vacation Bible School though. Yall have a good week.

Jenny has to work till 5:30 so everyone else is not getting here till 6, but you can come anytime.

Yeah, it's Stan's horse I am suppose to get. Since it is raining here this morning, it probably won't happen till Mon. I looked at the radar I don't think it's going to rain long. Looks like one big patch and then all clear ~fingers crossed:)~

I'll be gone for a while this morning too. No matter rain or not, we are getting Belle breed one more time, then she is going home.

Will do! - Feel free to just read back and jump into one of the conversations, talk about what you are doing with your horse! The thread gets quiet sometimes when everyone is busy (I have a wedding thing in a couple weeks that is keeping me busy), the more the merrier to keep it going!

High Cindy.... I must have missed this post about the spurs in all my pings. That happens to me sometimes!

Glad you got them figured out. Sorry you had the setback of tying him with the chain. Most of us have done stuff like that, dagnabit, but we live and learn.

How about the rest of your riding? Anything else going on to tell us about?

The end may be near for President Reagan as recent reports are that his health is deterioriating. He was a man who loved his horses and often said he did his best thinking while riding on his California ranch.

All the best to you Mr. President and thank you for all that you did for your country.

I'm about half-way through Peggy Noonan's great book, "When Character Was King, A Story of Ronald Reagan"...excellent book.

Noonan writes, "....His favorite horse when he was president was El Alamein, a white Arabian stallion, hard to control, given to him by President Portillo of Mexico before Reagan was elected president of the United States. His Secret Service men hated that horse. You had to be really good to ride him. Agent John Barletta would come up to the ranch a few days before the president visited and ride El Alamein to get the wildness out. Nancy's favorite horse was a handsome sorrel quarter horse called No Strings.

The Reagan's weren't "Photo Op" horse people...horses were part of their lives.
