Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

So Harley got used to moving in them then, looks like! They look pretty slick!
He did great.
But, guess what, exciting news, my mare is IN:). We're good to go, tonight.
Becky
My mare is bred:)
Becky
No pictures? ;~D
Howdy ya'll
We thought about it:)
It was actually one of the easist breedings we have done. Everyone stayed very calm. We will do it again Thurs, and Sat.
Becky
Howdy to you too. Sorry I missed you.
Becky
In the excitment of the mare coming into season, I forgot to ask you if you got your fence done yesterday? I know what you mean about likeing to fence and seeing the results, there is nothing prettier then a good tight, straight fence:)
Becky
There were three old steel wires (that rust) already here, so I tightened and left them rather than have to take them down, and before, I had just added hot white tape, but not always at the same level. Now we have added two new hard wires, and there are two rows of white tape all the way around. (It's hard to photograph since it's so invisible, especially the old wire.) But you can see the cars on the road in this shot.
This is looking back toward the house, the light was better so you can see.
I like that the fence is now TALL (it's over my head) with lots of good barrier there. ALl the wire is the big heavy guage stuff, three of the old rusty wires that aren't hot, but two new wires that are, and the tape is hot. I don't ~love~ wire fencing, but it's cheap, and is a safe fence as long as it is on.
It isn't really done, right now I am losing power by the end of it, and we need to look at some of the connections in the next few days and troubleshoot it.
It looks great:) I like that mesh hot wire. I want to make Rocky's pen and the front out of that this coming winter.
I just came in from mowing my pasture. I have decided it's not going to look real good this year. I have so much rock that has surfaced out there and so many piles of dead fall that I can't get it mowed well now. So this coming winter when everything has died down and I can see I am going to work a couple of hours a day on clean up out there, (rocks and dead fall), I am going to mark the top of rocks that the mower can't go over, seed and fertilize and get my pasture back in shape. It really is amazing how fast you can get a pasture to look and be decent if you concentrate on working it, and how fast it suddenly seems to go to pot.My pasture was alot better last year that it seems this year. But it's just to hard to do it around here in the summer, so next winter.......
And then I will also try to get my fencing straightened up.
Becky
We want to work on ours too... we don't have rocks, but the pasture just has no nourishment in it. It has rained a LOT in the past week and the grass just doesn't green up and grow, all that does grow is weeds.
I think come next spring, or maybe even this fall we might hire to have it tilled, fertilized and then re-seed it. It's just tired and overgrazed.
Wow, we are getting hit right now with a terrific storm. 60-80 MPH winds, and sheets of rain. Worst I've seen in a long time, and guess what, NO SIRENS have sounded. LOL.
Becky
You OK this morning? 2J also reported you guys had a terrible storm.
Just got in from riding. First time on the trails since the fugitvie was loose, but I got a call from a policman friend that the guy was caught. The boots were great.
We survived the storm. But in the town of Bixby, there were several big beautiful old pecan trees down, and downtown is still without electricity. While I was riding, I heard the sirens go off :). Must be testing them or something, but it is really funny, since they never blew them yesterday.
Becky
Glad to hear from ya!
Your reports with the sirens makes me shake my head. ;~D
I forgot to mention, I'm getting that mare in Sat. that the guy is paying me to ride:). I had to go to the feed store today, and he asked when he could bring her. I asked him if he would wait till Sat. when my mare will be leaving, breeding her again today, and Sat morn.
Oh and about the storm. It was pretty intense, more so in town also then here. Mack was in town, and pulled into a Lowes and got under an awning. He said it blew 60-80 mph for about 20-30 minutes without stopping. I think we got the tail end of it here, it blew hard but only for maybe 10 minutes. But it actually got worse as it moved off, further south, MaCalester reported winds of 105 miles per hour. I've heard it is much worse down there. So we dodged a bullet here. I really think because we are up on a hill (they call it a mountain here:), that somehow that parts the storm or slows the updraft down or something, but nothing really bad happens ~here~ but has often happened all around us. I think yesterday was probably about the only time in 23 years I got nervous, but that could have been because I was here by myself. In the last years Mack was always here and before the kids were and of course I had to be brave for them:). Only 1 other time have we gotten strong winds here, and we lost some shingles that time. I think my mountian saves us:)
Becky
Yeah, we were talking last night, I would like to know who determines who sounds them. The city officals, the local weathermen, the national weather service???? Who ever makes the determination is idiots, IMO:).
She had quite an event.... I am really spoiled by not having regular, life-threatening weather. I can't even imagine winds like that. Winds higher than 40 are rare here, and our tall trees couldn't take more.
Yeah, I saw her post, sounds scary.
We just got the mare bred again:). I'm really excited about having a foal next year. I guess about the middle of July I will take her and have her vet checked, and if she's not in foal get the shot and try once more this year. After that it would be getting to late.
