What Is A Vegetarian?

Now you may think this is weird..but I must know.
Where do "vegies" fall on the side of politics and the cost of freedom?
The reason I am asking this question is that I live in a small town in Michigan that has a 7th Day Adventist College in it and for the most part they are vegetarian. When it comes to politics and war it seems that they tend to stay away from either.
Now I know that this has to do with the religion and all but still....is religion the only reason.
Bring on the comments.

I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian -- don't believe in killing animals for food, when I don't need to do so to survive and thrive.
I'm pro the Iraq war, pro unfettered 2nd Amendment rights, pro-choice, and pro-freedom (and militantly anti-socialism, since it's the antithesis of freedom).

So... if a vegetarian eats vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?

as you see, this seems to be a diverse forum, where mostly conservative ideals are held, but not all of us hold all of them.
politically speaking, vegitarians are neutral and fall on both sides. where the difference comes in is for what reason one is a vegitarian tends to guide their vote in this field.
one who becomes a veg-head simply because they see no reason to eat an animal may risk their own health to use such a diet (and those who change to improve their diet, which is a slim crowd [no pun intended]); that sort may find themselves voting for the likes of Reagan.
those who refuse to eat animals because they feel animals are our equals tend to be a few fries short of a Happy Meal and would love to see another Klintoon in office.
the warning must be said however, that changing your diet may prove to be very risky, and as many will note:
1) we have canines for a reason! ( i dont mean pooches, i mean the pointy, flesh-tearing teeth towards the front of your mouth)
2) we are promised the animals as ours by God, and are even given guidelines to feasting on said animals.
3) our bodies need the flesh as we need the plant, hence the frequent illness associated with such a diet change. many doctors worth their salt would only recomend vegitarianism to those who are at risk by eating meat.

Let's face it. People are *MEANT* to eat meat. It says so in the Bible, and there's a reason why it *TASTES* so good. There exists the occasional *CONSERVATIVE* vegetarian, but they are few in number because people who are *SMART* enough to vote conservative are rarely *DUMB* enough to avoid eating the animals which *GOD* gave us to eat!

I am also a vegetarian - for reasons of health, morality and taste (I could no more eat a slab of red meat than I could a pile of excrement).

Where in the Bible does it say that we're supposed to eat meat?

Vegatarian - a very old American Indian word for lousy hunter.
But seriously, there are many reason given for being one of the many forms of 'vegatrianism.'
Some are religious or psuedo-religious. Harming another living thing and such as this.
Some are health reasons. Some of these are based on facts. Most are based on fantasy.
Some reason are political. (see PETA and such groups)
In my personal perspective vegatarianism is unhealthful and quickly becomes a psychological crutch. Even the most carefully constructed veggie diet under the best of condidtions will not supply essential nutrients to the human body. Supplementation is needed to make up for this short-coming.
Having said that I will admit that prior to going on the ATKINS plan, I ate very ltttle red meat. I also maintained my cholesterol under 200. Since going on ATKINS, my cholesterol has dropped to 156 and my good cholesterol has increased and bad cholesterol has dropped.
All statements are purely my own opinion.

*GENESIS* 9:3.
To: Sir Valentino
Genesis 9 3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. This isn't a requirement to eat meat. The Bible also discusses slavery. Does this mean I am required to own a slave?
You also left out the next line in Genesis:
4 "But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it.
My interpretation is that G-d is saying it is okay to eat roadkill, but you must NOT kill an already live animal for the purposes of eating it.

Well there's a bit of irony... someone on the Atkins diet saying that it is unhealthy to be a vegetarian.
I am all for people eating whatever they want to eat. I don't understand why meat eaters feel so threatened by vegetarians.

Perhaps your low levels of taurine or B12 are causing you a bit of paranoia.

This isn't a requirement to eat meat. The Bible also discusses slavery. Does this mean I am required to own a slave? That is what is known as a *STRAW MAN* argument. The simple fact is that people were *MEANT* to eat meat. Otherwise, we wouldn't have *CANINE* teeth! Do you think those are for eating *TOFU*???
To: michwm
I quit eating meat and fowl in 1991. For awhile, I didn't eat fish, but finally started eating shark. I figured that he would eat me, so screw 'em. I eat fish a few times a week and justify it because they spend all day eating each other anyway.
Pro gun, pro Iraq war, pro death penalty.
