The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I did get too hot today. While we were at the mall, I thought I was going to pass out cuz it was so hot. Elf-boy and I went to chick-fil-a to get him some lunch. I had eaten already, but got a Dr. Pepper to cool me down a bit. Went to get a refill, and the guy behind the counter dropped my drink. I got soaked, and the straw actually scratched elf-boy's neck. It irked me that it happend in the first place, and in the second place that the guy didn't bother to apologize. However, at least my shopping had already been completed, and fortunately, I had something I could change into.
Literally, my *white* blouse was completely soaked, and I was wearing sweatpants that were wet from the knees down. My shoes got vey wet too (they squeak now, and kinda stick to the floor), but I just wore them anyway. Today was not a shoe-buying jaunt. At least the guy gave me a new Dr Pepper. He had better be glad I had somethign to change into! Beware of pissing off pregnant women.... LOL!

Yes, he did, and that's the novel! He also invented the waterbed. And other things, I believe.
However, his characters use sliderules to calculate their trips between the Moon and Mars... there's a brilliantly funny scene in "The Rolling Stones" where the father, Grandma Hazel, the twins - Castor and Pollux- and the sister all calculate their course, and the sister's is off by orders of magnitude... she has them heading for Proxima Centauri, I believe. Sigh... I love that book. Just one great scene after another.
Oh, and he invented Tribbles, too - the guy who wrote that Star Trek episode admits he stole tribbles from the flat cats in "Rolling Stones".

There is simply no reason whatsoever for tolls on interstate highways. Agreed! In spades! I've spent most of my life drivin' on 2 lane state highways of farm and ranch roads. It just royally ticks me off to not know a route around a road that wants to make me pay!!! It is just so *wrong*

Drafting DanYeah, Dan was the name of the character, I think--been awhile since I read that. I thought it was pretty visionary that Heinlein came up with that way back then.

It was a visionary novel.... except the 'future' was 2001, and I don't have a household robot, or any of the other marvels. Heck, we don't even have coldsleep.
Sent you a mail, nothing urgent though.

Beware of pissing off pregnant women.... LOL!OH yeah! I remember those times! LOL
I loved the day though. Stayed out in the privacy of my back yard sprawled out in a lawn chair in my bikini with a good book! It was sublime!

That was a really good novel. I didn't know about the waterbed and Tribbles! Still have to read
Rolling Stones.
BTW, I just finished Doomsday Book--"Apocalyptic!" :)

Rosie, do the 17-year cicadas come that far north? I know we're talking about them down here already. It's actually mildly cool that a bug has such a strange lifespan.

So, you liked it?
Rolling Stones is one of my favorite three Heinlein novels. One of the others is "Moon is a Harsh Mistress", and the third varies depending on my mood.

Because they show up once every seventeen years.
Last time, I was four and thought they were fun.
