The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I just made myself a big ol' salad. Goes with the wonderful warm weather we had today! I bet you were hot! I loved every minute of it. It almost got up to 90 here today. Was 88!!!

Heh...you DO realize that the pro-Mac people are due to show up any second, right? Beware!
For the most part, I don't like 'em either. They don't play nice on a mixed network, for one. And the Mac labs on campus take a LOT more of our time to maintain.

Well... you *are* ancient in computing-years. :-)
I wouldn't be so hard on the Mac though. It was pretty cool idea when it came out. Really... :-)
I'm only a closet MacHead. At work I persecute and hunt them down and kill them with exreme prejudice.

Anyone who likes a system that has made such marvelously intuitive design choices - like dragging the floppy icon to the trash can to eject it - or eliminating the floppy drive entirely before an adequate replacement came along - or the marvelous single-button mouse - can take a little heat.

How could anybody with an attitude like that ever aspire to geekdom? Gadgets? ROFL. On the way home tonight, I was yakking away on onw radio, and decided to get the microphone for the other radio, so I could scan the short wave bands. The mic cords was wrapped around my cell phone, and in the process of disentangling it, I spilled my travel mug full of hot tea.
I got to thinking, maybe I have too many gadgets here. Thankfully, that thought disappeared very quickly!
He should be barred from even getting a learner's permit, much less a real geek license. I think he's on the fast track towards pointy-haired boss.
ROFLMAO!!

"it was about as inconvenient as having the cable go out on the TV." Yes, I guess it must have been about the same for my grandparents, they were all born about the turn of the century (20th and 19th, that is). Ice boxes used ice, for instance.

My personal favorite is the CD-ROM drive with no external eject button. Brilliant, just BRILLIANT! Why didn't I think of that?
As for the single button mouse, what cracks me up is that you DO get left button functionality if you plug in a two button mouse, but they STILL aren't shipping 'em with one. Huh?
And the round iMac mouse was the most poorly designed input advice ever. We still have a few of those around. How that was released I'll never understand.

Actually... I'm sure you know, but OS X was a Godsend, especially running on mixed networks. We could *finally* get the he!! rid of fargin' Appletalk. Finally it was a true IP-only client.
Appletalk was only created to frustrate network engineers. I'm convinced on this.

You may not know this, but before he was coined elf-boy, he was known as Spiderboy.LOL! I remember getting yelled at when I was about 5 because I tried to copy Spiderman by bracing one foot and hand on either side of the hallway so I could walk up the wall :) Here's the action figure I had:

Eesh. Good heavens. I need to garnish my computer with garlic to keep the evil forces from contaminating it... worst time I ever had, was trying to help someone with her Mac. I finally told her to buy a real computer.

Our problem with 'em now is IP related, though. They don't play nice with DHCP.
But I've heard nightmares about Appletalk...so I guess it's a step forward, in any case.

Thinking about it, she's been using a glorified typewriter for years.Speaking of which, did you ever notice that Heinlein invented a version of a CAD drawing program based on a typewriter in one of his early stories? I think it was the inventor character in Door Into Summer.

After all the things my Grama saw in her life when asking her what invention was the best for her, she said, "The best thing that ever happened was when they began to make pre-dyed oleo so I didn't have to mix in the dye by hand anymore."
Okay, I was just a *little* surprised by that answer.

Toll roads are tools of the devil. Just wrong.
Especially when you consider that the Interstate highway system was 95% front-funded with federal dollars. There is simply no reason whatsoever for tolls on interstate highways. None.

It is--I just had one :) Had a bottle of Guinness Harp slightly before that. I'm relaxed tonight :)
