The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Eh, I don't read slash (personal choice, it disgusts me). But some of my friends read/write it so... I try to be cool about it.

Oh, and self insertion is 99.9999% of the time a Really Bad Thing. Mary Sue Must Die.

How are you defining "slashfic"?--we might not be talking about the same thing.

Slashfic usually involves... alernative relationships, generally male/male (because the writers are women?) and can be explicit though often not.

What's your definition?

Okay. Sounds like you're talking about printed fanzines then? I was thinking online.

I was in the pre-internet era. You might ship stories via an email group, but there really weren't sites dedicated to fandom. With all the potential problems that internet fandom could bring, I could see why Anne might have be cracking down harder now. I'd really not explore present day online fandom if what you're saying is true. I'd rather remember things the way they were before the idiots wrecked it.

If that's what you meant, we're definitely not talking about the same thing :) I thought you meant "slash" as in "they're hacking the original to pieces" :) Wasn't relating it whatsoever to what you're describing.

So have you written anything besides Pern fanfic, then?

Hehehe... no, 'slashfic' is a definite subgenre in the fanfiction world. Um, some of the pairings are really, really alarming. When stories that romantically link Spock and Captain Kirk start to appear normal (next to other pairings), you've been online waaaay too long.

A bit of Star Wars fanfic, but mostly as a favor for a friend, who was obviously desperate for material to fill out her Swars fanzine. :)

Yikes!--compared to that the average Trekkie sounds normal! I think the real Spock would agree that such a pairing would be extremely illogical. Please reference the episode "This Side of Paradise" which definitively establishes that Spock had a girlfriend :)

LOL! Sounds fun :) I used to write and draw my own Star Wars comics as a kid :) My brother's a bit closer to real fandom, though--his job is helping run this website:

Yeah, um, I'm not sure Vulcans would see gay sex as "logical". But that's really mild in fandom. There are certain fandoms where, if two characters have EVER appeared in the same room together, they will be romantically linked by someone.

If they have not appeared together, they will be presumed to be the same person by someone else...

So Khan and the bald lady from Star Trek: The Motion Picture are the same person? :)

Hey everyone, I just got word from Corin that the biopsy they did on his mom a couple of weeks ago came back positive. Please lift her up in prayer. She goes back to the doctor tomorrow to find out if this means more surgery or radiation.

I know all of you will pray. Thanks.

I just don't know what's going on with today's generation. There I was, working away in my cubicle, with my Palm Pilot, wireless headset, laser pen pointer, and Zip-Linq USB cables all ready to spring into action. And this 20-something kid, who also works the help desk, comes by, and says, "you have too many gadgets".

How could anybody with an attitude like that ever aspire to geekdom? Gadgets? These are my working tools I use every day to outrun kids like him.

He should be barred from even getting a learner's permit, much less a real geek license. I think he's on the fast track towards pointy-haired boss.

That is scary!!! 20-something at that! Maybe you need to take him under your wing and teach him the way of the jedi. :-)
