The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Tolkien was a big-time onomatophile (I'm guessing at the Greek for "name-lover")He was--even though I'm not sure that's a real word, LOL! I think "onomatologist" is real, though :)

And LF, winmag, I don't think we have ever seen pics of you! - wanna give us one to post? I'll upload the two latest pictures of me I have. Both have me in the distance, standing in front of something. One is a Sidewinder missile cart, the other is the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. I'd prefer the shot with the Wienermobile, as that's more my style.
I'll also upload a picture of my torque wrench setup, the latest tool in the HHD knife project.

Trust me, I don't walk unseen, I've won no rings, and never guested with eagles. The others may or may not be applicable.
I never read "Stranger in a Strange Land" - well, I started it but I kind of hated it, so I gave up. Heinlein got a little weird there. Too bad.
Still, he was the best when he was good.
Ever read any Keith Laumer? He's one of my 'recent' discoveries, within the last three years I've read close to half of what he wrote. He's best know for his "Retief" and 'Bolo' stories. I love Retief, hate the bolos. He also had a lot of grand old stories - dystopias, what have you.

I haven't read any Laumer, but I like dystopias, at least certain ones (I should say, I like pre-cyberpunk dystopias). What's his stuff like?

Some of his stuff is funny, some is darker. He specializes in "Planet/girl/humanity is in trouble. Hero saves the day by dint of his refusal to give up in face of insurmountable odds". The "Retief" stories are hilarious little pieces about a galactic diplomat who is always resorting to, um, more stringent negotations, to the horror of his superiors (it has some of the best beaurocrats I've ever met).
Baen has been reprinting a few of Laumer's books. In fact, you can read a couple of them online, free, at Baen's free library - the site seems to be down but go to www.baen.com and look for the link that says "free library" - it's not hard after that.

I'll check that out. Baen publishes some good stuff. I have one of their old printed catalogs.
How about Stephen Donaldson?

Thank you, MBY, but be careful, you might go blind.
Actually, I seem to have one on my home hard disk, I'll try to send it to Miss Hair.

Feeling better now? Not as good as I'm gonna feel in about a half hour. :-)
But yes, that little nap and turning the thermostat way up in the bachpad all night really worked.
