The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I've only read Heinlein sporadically -- can't seem to get into the LL series. I didn't like SIASL but I loved one of his later works, "Job: a Comedy of Justice" though I wouldn't recommend it to many Christians. As a Christian I assume that most SF writers' theological views will differ from mine, since the SF genre has its historical roots in non-Christian intellectual movements like positivism; but I can tolerate that in a story if the story is good anyway. I think, though, that I tend to like Heinlein more when he's just being entertaining than when he's being philosophical. I like his stories more for their SF premises and the creative things he does with them.

Oh yeah, I know what you're talking about. I didn't know what you meant by "Tolkien folk" I was thinking you meant Tolkien fans and I was lost...
Tolkien was a big-time onomatophile (I'm guessing at the Greek for "name-lover") and took great care in his name choices. Though he did go a little crazy on the number of them given to one person.
The etymology fits the names well-- "Bucca" is Old English for "buck" for example. And The "Eo" root on the names of Eowyn and Eomer comes from "Eoh" meaning "horse" in OE.

I believe in many names. In fact I'm thinking of telling random strangers to call me Jen, Spammer Queen of Dooo-OOO-oom.LOL!--that's what I call you--as well as She Who Steals the Precious :) Also, what about She Who Walks Unseen? She Who Drowns Her Friends and Draws Them Alive Again From the Water? Friend of Elves and Guest of Eagles? Then there's Ring-winner and Luckwearer--and Barrel-rider. . .

I have a GREAT red dress. Cept, it's not a formal dress. Pretty snazzy though. I would bring it up for something!
Believe me though, I could come up with attire!
