The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Apologize to your spouses for me.... I have now gotten ~two~ spouse names wrong on the wedding invitations!
I mean well....

Hey, what was the scoop with the weird FR problem over the weekend? It started just before I left Thursday - why I didn't say goodbye - and I guess it recovered later? Is that why there were only about three dozen posts all weekend?

Aaaah, I see.
Big'ol only bought one yardsign. It's gonna get vandalized. We'll have to buy more.

I came across this Gerber LST II knife at Lowe's for $19.95.
Made in the USA! (if Portland, OR still counts), and easy one-handed opening. No pocket clip, and the 2.5 inch blade is a bit on the small side, but I really like it as a
pocket knife. It's a lockback, rather than a framelock, so it really needs two hands to close it. No problem, at one time lockbacks were almost the only type of locking system. Here are some pictures with the HHD knife, the "gold standard".

I've come to the conclusion that there is a range of knife functions. Under-three-inches is definitely a pocket knife. Vey handy to have, and light enough to be comfortable in a pocket without needing a pocket clip.
Then there is the "working knife", with a blade in the range of 3-4 inches. Its heavier construction allows for use more than cutting string, paper, light cloth, etc. It's heavy enough that a pocket clip is helpful, especially if you want to carry it clipped to your armor.
Then there's the "field knife", with a blade of 4-5 inches. Even more heavy duty, even a folding knife this size is big enough, it probably needs its own pouch for carrying. It's about as small a knife as is practical for self-defense.
Finally, there's the "survival" or "fighting" knife, with a blade of 5+ inches. It's either a fixed-blade, or one big honkin' folder. Often referred to in the military as a "Hollywood knife". The troops that really need one already have one, because it's as important as a good pair of boots, and no corners are cut.
In further news, Smoky Mountain informed me the last five CRKT knives never existed, and there are none left. So 141 was our final count. Steve gets 12 more knives for his buddies, and then there is only one knife left.
Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble. I hope thisinformation proves useful for you.

I'm on a pretty busy road.... good pasture visibility for a sign.... we're gonna get ~something~
To: JenB
There was a DNS issue.... FR had a fake phone number on their domain registration, and someone 'complained' about it and it was suspended till they straightened it out.
To: 300winmag
Well, you like this one? Think it would be as helpful as the other one?
To: JenB
Over that period, you could get in under the numeric http address, just not the name. But you had to get somewhere, like the backup site, to figure that out.
To: HairOfTheDog
Well, you like this one? Think it would be as helpful as the other one?Oh, I like it a lot. If we're interested in pocket knives, this would be a great item. I just think we were "spoiled" by getting those CRKT Sampsons for such a great price, and in such numbers. Everyone should have a pocket knife for little jobs, regardless of the larger knife they may carry.

I did get in but I couldn't seem to log in. Have no idea why. It was annoying, for the 45 minutes it affected me.
Hmm. Do we have a pool going as to who the complainent was?

Do you like this knife better than the other knives under evaluation?
To: JenB
Its even more interesting than that. It was only one phone number out of the four listed on the registration that was wrong (was a 555 number). And all the email addresses listed were good. And the registrar (GKG.net) claimed to have tried to contact them several times (although John Rob says he never heard from them) before they just up and pulled the plug.
It seems pretty fishy to me.

Do you like this knife better than the other knives under evaluation? Right now, I'd happily give away this Gerber, or the Schrade, depending on where the best deals were at the time. I have no reservations about either knife, while there are several things about the Kershaw that give me pause. We'd have the "pocket knife" situation nailed down with these two. It's just a matter of looking around, and seeing if a great deal on a "working knife" pops up again. But I can't think of any GI who wouldn't be happy with one of these guys.
My next step is to buy large enough quantities of one or both, so I can have some inventory on hand. And I have to still keep an eye out for any great deal on a bigger knife that might happen along.
We may wind up with 2-4 different knives that we give out, depending on how good we've been in catching the deals.

It isn't a stranger.... Very true. I should have said an unknown person as all close relatives had been called. The boy is still not found. Family is gathered but no idea who has the child. *sigh*
