Your desk is too clean.The outsourcing people will be touring this week, and everybody has to clean up. I just wanted photographic proof that my desk was clean.
Actually, I only use the "bible" for those things too involed, or so seldom used, that they aren't in my Palm Pilot. I have over 230+ sets of hints, contacts, etc. in the Palm, and the Palm desktop app. My goal is to refer to the "bible" as little as possible.

I should still do my semi-monthly stack-things-in-piles thing pretty soon. Doesn't actually mean things are organized, but it looks better...

I wish the pups could stay out in the yard all night, but the breed is so fixated on their "master" they'd take it as punishment being forced to be out there without him. Oh I wouldn't dream of leaving pooches outside, I just wondered if you frequently saw deer, or if the recent presence of your dogs kept them wary. Deer can smell them. Even though Gidget sleeps in, I think she is out enough, making rounds, barking at noises, that the deer I know we have near here never come close to the house. I only see them sometimes along the very far edge of the pasture.

I was just thinking.....is there any way you can enclose your square-foot garden in a chicken wire fence? Put a chicken wire roof over it?
Then, to get fancy, you could put plastic over it to make a greenhouse.

Or lion pee. 'round here they are selling a cocktail of carnivor pee to spray around gardens. Heh... Not sure I would use it on food crops.

I think it would be hard to work the garden if there was a fence directly around the beds..
Our trouble here would be bunnies.... building a bunny-proof fence is I think even harder than a deer fence.

ecurbh would like to have a garden here.... only place on the whole property the gets enough sun is the pasture. The rest is all too shady... There isn't water out there, but I suppose we could invest in lots of hose.... the harder problem would be bunnies.

Ok, here's the deer plan:
1. Companion planting: I'm planting smelly plants on the outer edges. These include marigolds, garlic, onions, shallots, chile peppers, etc.
2. Taste/odor deterrents: gonna get one of those wax-based pepper sprays. Coyote Urine is another definate. Wish I could rely on the pups. But Jack drinks so much water that his production, while copious, is too diluted. Am flirting with the idea of garlic and rotton egg combos.
3. Yummy plants elsewhere: There's a community property area that no one frequents and that is well removed from my garden patch. I'm gonna sprinkle some lettuce seed back there to give the varmints an alternative.
4. Netting: I'm installing a trellis on the north end of each plot. A bit of bird netting can be draped over the trellis (like the ridgline in a platform tent) and staked out taut. I've read that deer don't like the idea of becoming entagled and won't try to walk over it. Another thing I read suggested somple upright stakes with fishing line strung at deer-chest height. They walk into it, and not seeing it, get spooked. But I dunno.
5. This is also an option.

Depending on how ripe it is, I'll have to put it on the tender young trees we're putting in to screen Doughboy. I can put up with anything if it means he gets to smell rotten stink whilst he builds that blasted shed. ;P
