The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm still up. I'll post some pics of my cubicle at work, if the )$#*&( phone ever stops ringing. This has NOT been a quiet night, or I would have freeped more.

Visited my oldest buddy today, we've known each other for 35 years now. He's a tech and knife geek, too. (Maybe that's why we've been like blood brothers for 35 years). I had him look at our two new candidate knives.

He said the Kershaw was well-made, but too hard to open. Rated it a B. Tryed the Schrade, and immediately rated it B+. Said it was nice and light, and opened easily with either hand. Suggested leaving the Kershaw only as a fallback item.

As a veteran (Riverine Nine, Mekong River, 1968), he has one of our HHD knives. Rates it as a solid "A", but says the Schrade is a real nice knife, too.

He works a helpdesk from his home, and said he'd try to schmooze Schrade into getting us a better deal, once he learns more about us from our Hobbit Hole site. If he can't get anywhere with the factory, he'll try the big distributors.

Okay, here are some shot of muh crib. The color might be a bit off, because my monitor has a weak red gun, and I can't tell if tweaking the colors makes things better or worse.

First is an overall view of my little fiefdom.

Next, My PC, trackball (the only thing that works with my carpal tunnel), and my trusty Palm Pilot. Speakers for playing MP3s on weekends, and a hugh cup of water, needed to keep the vocal cords from drying out.

Then a view of my phone and cordless headset device, my "bible" and note pad. Also, check out the concave rearview mirror in the upper right corner, so nobody can sneak up on me.

A hopefully temporary sign explaining to people what the little LED lightshow device means. When I'm talking on my headset with my back to visitors, I hope this gives them a clue that I'm ON THE PHONE!

Another one of the techs had the nerve to say I have too many gadgets!

Here is a picture of me and my sweetie. Has nothing to do with anything really, just that she has been a trooper through all this and very supportive. I am very proud of her and wanted to share with all of you. Steve

Lovely woman. Is there anything nice we can do as a "thank you" for her? The troops aren't the only ones making sacrifices, families are, too.

This is our winning team from the Family Fued tournament a few weeks ago. I know some of the prior military are going to ask why the name "Blue Falcons". Well, it was actually started as a joke to spite the active duty unit that we are stuck with. Lets just say our relations with them are not the best. If you were never in the military and dont understand the "Blue Falcon" reference, ask around. Someone will know. Lunch is over, and I gotta get back to work. Good day all.

I'm doing some research. A multi-front attack is most effective- so say the "experts". Will keep ya posted.

I might have to explain that a .30-06 would work very well on all bothersome varmints.

I'd have to explain what a varmint is- he's not too bright. Besides his wife is an elementary school teacher (you know the type) and she'd interpret it all wrong.

we are planning to fence, but it won't be the deer-proof variety.

I wish the pups could stay out in the yard all night, but the breed is so fixated on their "master" they'd take it as punishment being forced to be out there without him. That and they're not really guard dogs- they herd. One afternoon Sadie alerted to a large group of deer moving through the back part of our property where it's heavily wooded. She took a few steps, got down in her stance and was going to go circle around them as soon as Big'ol gave the order. He called her back (she's such a good girl!!) and Jack the Dufuss never even noticed there were things to chase.
