The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I just want to thank everyone for their prayers. I think the roughest part of this is yet to come.

Honestly, I feel that my grandpa has found rest and relief, for he will no longer be lonely, and his body has been healed. What I dread, though, is telling HIS siblings (5 surviving, 4 of which wherabouts are known).

WN, his sister lives up in Vernon. They were very close when they were younger, i.e. before he went into the Home.

Grandpa was born in 1923 in Hill Co., TX, served in the USNavy during WWII (He tested for Chief, but I don't know if he ever made it), met and married my grandma when they were working at Convair (now known as Lockheed). In 1982 he had a debilitating stroke that demanded more attention than my grandma was able to give, and still make house payments. She decided it was best for him to be in a nursing home, where she went to be with him a few hours every day for the rest of her life. Someone on the nursing home staff commented to me today, while I was there, that he had lived there longer than any other resident, and will be sorely missed.

I think someone was saying yesterday that I was a trouble-maker! :-)

Family joke... my mom and dad's friends were the White's. One of their son's went to school up in Ft. Worth and lived in White Settlement. So, it was "their" town.

That part is sad. But, I'm glad you can realize what a blessed release this is for your granddad. I know it must have been a long row to hoe for him. He is in a better place now. more hugs to you.

I have an audio tape version of Summer of the Danes with Derek Jocobi reading it! I found it at a Building 19 (kind of an Odd Lots place) for less than $5 one summer, and listened to it on a trip down South. I just love his voice, and it was great hearing the book read by him.

I read "The Golden Ocean" and "Master and Commander" , but just couldnt' get into Desolation Island. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind or something. I'll try it again sometime.

Glad to hear Gypsy is settling in. She such a lucky doggie!

Thanks much! I have some things to do first thing in the morning, but I think that before I start calling the siblings, I am going to call the hospital where he was (Kindred? or something like that?) to try to find out more information. Evidently, the nurse did call me this morning (I actually got the news from my brother) either while I was still asleep, or after I left to take elf-boy to school (the upstairs answering machine and the downstairs phone don't agree on the time the message was left). I am not really sure what to do next, since mom is out of town. She was his guardian. I think I may need to go to the funeral home, but I am not sure, especially since I am not prepared to *pay* for anything at this time. I may need to go digging into mom's files afterall (YIKES!).

I guess so!

Well, I have to go sit on the couch and nurse my hands... they are all full of splinters from our weekend work, and I think I only have two long nails left... might as well ~off~ em!

I miss my lab. *snif*

My sweetie was a black lab named Dixie. When we had to move into a small apartment, we let her stay at my BIL's ---he has a lot of acreage --- she was shot by one of his neighbors. :-(
