The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I could tell you my ambitions, but then I'd have to kill you - actually my ambitions are to become fabulously wealthy so I can commute between Hawaii and New Zealand and other places depending on my mood.
Tough Guide to Fantasyland - it seems to be out of print currently -
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0886778328/103-4045089-7199864?v=glance&s=books Taming of the Shrew... I love that play. Memorized part of it for my Shakespeare class and can even recite a little off the top of my head. It's not my favorite, but close.

So you're planning to conquer Hawaii and New Zealand first? Then what? [Turns on hidden tape recorder wired to anti-Overlord authorities. . .]
Tough Guide to Fantasyland sounds funny! I just checked to see if my library has a copy, but no luck. BTW, I did find an illustrated copy of Pratchett's The Last Hero yesterday and checked that out--is that any good?
My favorite Shakespeare is Othello, but as far as his comedies I like Tempest, Twelfth Night, and Midsummer Night's Dream best of what I've read. Taming of the Shrew is pretty funny so far--I'm into Act II now.

Isn't there a "Is your Character a Mary Sue?" list somewhere? :-)

Hey Hattie! (Mind if I call you that? How 'bout Mr. Hat? :-))I think we'd better ask Mr. Hat if he'd mind? Sorry, Mr. Hat says no--and we know it's a bad idea to make Mr. Hat angry:

Right... "Last Hero" is really aimed at Discworld fans. I didn't care for it much myself, and it's hard to "get into" Discworld that way.
Look for... oh, "Hogfather" is a brilliant intro. Some of the characters show up in previous novels, so you might get a little confused, but it's hilarious. Part of the 'Death' sub-series. Or "Guards, Guards", which starts the Night Watch subseries.
Much Ado About Nothing is my favorite play. Macbeth is my favorite tragedy - "All Neptune's mighty ocean cannot wash this little hand".
I'm not going to conquer Hawaii et al! I'm just going to live there!

Yes, there is. I'm not sure where...s hall have to look. I believe the first question is "Is your character named for you? A nickname you had as a child? Something you really wish you were named? Put down the pencil, it's a Mary Sue".

98. If an attractive young couple enters my realm, I will carefully monitor their activities. If I find they are happy and affectionate, I will ignore them. However if circumstance have forced them together against their will and they spend all their time bickering and criticizing each other except during the intermittent occasions when they are saving each others' lives at which point there are hints of sexual tension, I will immediately order their execution.Good one....

I'll keep an eye out for the other Pratchetts you mention. I mainly grabbed that one because, being illustrated, it was next to the comic books that were my real reason for being in that section :)
Hawaii would be a nice place to live!--great weather and great diving. But how will living there further your plans to conquer the Pacific?--are you planning to commandeer the fleet at Pearl Harbor?
Just finished another Godzilla movie, which I've been watching while reading Taming of the Shrew (makes for an interesting combination!); now I'm about to start Godzilla's Revenge, which is one of the ones with Godzilla's son in it. Who the mother is they never tell us!
To: stands2reason
Didn't Darth Vader apply that one to Han and Leia in Empire Strikes Back?

I'm not going to conquer anything. Too much work; I'd rather rule through someone else.

I'm not going to conquer anything. Too much work; I'd rather rule through someone else.Aha! I knew you were hiding evil plans of world conquest in there somewhere! Your aspiration is to be the Evil Over-Administrator! :) But before you kill me, tell me one thing: why will ruling from Hawaii be more efficient than ruling from somewhere else? It doesn't have anything to do with Triangles, does it? :)
To: JenB
BTW, since you've confessed your plan for world conquest, I'll tell you mine:
1) Acquire a job at the UN which gives me access to the translators' headphones.
2) Hypnotize the UN representatives by broadcasting the music of the Minstrel of Gondor into their headphones.
3) Dehydrate the UN representatives and hold them ransom for--bwahahahahaha--1 million dollars!
Either that or take over Hawaii--now that you mention it, that also sounds like a good plan. I dunno, I can't decide. It's not easy being evil.

I just think it would be worth the hassles of running the world, to live in Hawaii. Those evil overlords always put their Fortresses of Doom in the least inviting areas. Me, I'd live somewhere nice.
Dude, I don't think anyone would pay $10 for the UN reps. Maybe if you promised to feed them to sharks or something...

Me, I'd live somewhere nice. The Legion of Doom had their Fortress in a swamp in the Everglades or some such location. I thought that was a pretty good (by which I mean "evil") idea. Then of course Superman's Fortress of Solitude was at the North Pole, so apparently there's no correlation between alignment and geographic location of one's fortress.
Dude, I don't think anyone would pay $10 for the UN reps.
Hey, it worked for the Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman in the 1960s Batman movie! Now if the Joker doesn't know evil, tell me who does? If I were you I'd be paying attention to my evil lessons and taking evil notes instead of contradicting your evil elders. See, that's the problem with evil geniuses today, they think they always think they can do it better than the older generation. I'd like to know how would you improve on Mr. Freeze's plan to kill Batman and Robin by freezing them into giant Slurpie drinks?--huh, Ms. Smarty-Pants?
Maybe if you promised to feed them to sharks or something...
Hmmm--maybe you have been studying your evil lessons after all. Do the sharks have laser beams attached to their foreheads?
To: Fedora
No, sharks have been hypnotized by my mind wave to go after beauraucrats at the first whiff. And the shark-pool has pirahnas, too.
And I'm offended by 'Ms'. It's a feminist way to say "I won't be defined by my relationship to a man" and is a sign of insecurity. I'm a 'Miss' until I'm a 'Mrs'. Or a 'Dr'.
