The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

What else is on the list of things I have to have read in order to avoid being ostracized from the SF/fantasy geek community? :)

Oh, gee, let's see. You've got Tolkien, Hitchhikers' Guide, "Princes Bride" - more or less. I assume you like Monty Python.... you should really ask Bear and Rose about this. You know the Evil Overlord's List?

No, you'll have to tell me about the Evil Overlord's List :) BTW, in my last post I also meant to ask about movies.

And you, on the other hand, need to read Conan :)

I'm not so 'up' on movies. Star Wars, of course. At least a little Star Trek. Oh! Galaxy Quest, though that's only really funny if you know Trek. 'Fifth Element'.

Good Moring OT & Hair (although it is about noon.) Gypsy did fine on the walk, walked up to store and back through the neighborhoods, she didn't bark back at any of the numerous dogs that barked at her. Walks well on the leash.

She sorta knows "sit", that's about it, so far. She is kinda skitish on the stairs to the second floor, both up and down. She does not know "come" yet, but she will fetch the tennis ball to you.

Well, she is settling in, considering its been less than 24 hours. She did sleep through the night. We've been brushing her, not sure when the last brushing was, but she enjoys it.

All in all, I think we all (her and us and the kitties) will be a cohesive unit afore long. :-)

Although I haven't seen this list before, I have long regarded the principle underlying rules #4, 6, and 7 as the most fundamental rule governing what not to do if you capture James Bond:

4. Shooting is not too good for my enemies.

6. I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them.

7. When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me, will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll say, "No." and shoot him. No, on second thought I'll shoot him then say "No."

From Austin Powers:

"You gonna shoot him now, dad?"

"No. I'm going to place him in an unnecessarily elaborate trap which he may easily escape from."

"Why don't we just shoot him?"

"Hey, who's the evil genius here, anyway? One more peep out of you, mister, and you're grounded."

I've been surfing the internet for good knives, and I've come to the conclusion that we can't depend on having one knife, at a great price, available forever. We have to plan for the long haul. Therefore, I'm looking at different brands of knives that meet the Hobbit Hole standards, are priced right, and are available from many dealers. I'm starting to sound like a purchasing agent.

When it comes time to buy more knives, I'll shop around for the best deal on any of the HHD-approved knives out there. That means that the troops may receive different knives at different times. They'll all meet out standards, though.

In order to do this properly, I've assigned myself the dreary chore of buying one of each knife for evaluation purposes. It's a tough job, bu someone's gotta do it. :) So I have a Camillus Arclite on the way. They have a version costing $4 more, which includes a belt sheath, pocket clip, and other thingies for attaching to web gear, etc. It would be a better deal than the neck-knife-only model.

Another knife I'm getting is the Gerber Parafram II. It looks like a vey good under-$25 (barely) folding lockback.

And CRKT makes (made) a neck-knife called the "Stiff Kiss". As luck would have it, it is no longer in production, but it appears to still be out there among the dealers. It also has the extra pieces to attach the knife to various things.

So we may have two or three kinds of HH knives in the inventory, depending on market conditions. But we'll always have something for the troops.

I thought I sent you those, I know I've seen that one of OT on the Entmoot 04 screensaver. Let me see if I can just share the York album with them all so you can see what you need.

Is that to help you in your aspirations to become an Evil Overlord?--or is that Overlady? :)
