This is simply a cookie being dropped by an ad placement company. Drudge doesn't have anything to do with it explicitly other than the company who handles placing ads on his site is using another company who is dropping this cookie. They are everywhere. I have SpyBot immunize and select "block silently" to avoid those annoying messages. But I'll follow through with your suggestion and email him to let him know that we're against such tracking cookies.

Cookies, though those programs detect them, aren't spyware.

Does this mean I could get spammed with earthquake data or sweeps ratings?

Avenue A's an advertising firm that produces ads and hosts them. They're putting a cookie on your computer so that they (presumably) can cycle ads on your browser so you don't see the same one twice.

In case you're interested, cookies are used to store what you've done so far on that site as HTTP is a "stateless" protocol. Your browser handles who can read the cookie and only the site that sets the cookie can read it -- so Avenue A can't read FR's cookie.

Install Google's free searchbar in your browser and say goodbye to Pop-Up's forever! (unless you specifically want pop-ups from specific sites) Having the Google searchbar right at hand for searches is great, too.

If your browser/firewall security options are set low enough that you're seeing anything like this, then you're a braver man than I. When I encounter a site that won't work unless I turn down my security options (especially 'active scripting') I ask myself the question "Do I trust these people enough that I would purchase software from them and explicitly execute it?"

I think we need to let Drudge know our objection to this kind of thing.

Drudge isn't the problem - it's the low-quality crap operating system called Windows.

You should send your complaints to Bill Gates instead.

Or get a better operating system and web browser that isn't plagued with worms, viruses and spyware.

Two times in the last week I have been hit with malicious spyware from the Drudge site. I have been going to the site daily for over 2 years. I put up with annoying popups, but the spyware is unacceptable. I got hit with something this morning that took an hour to clean up. I have taken Drudge off my favorites on all of my computers.
