Our church Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, CA., has secured 4500 tickets, and a whole theater here, the two nights before the regular movie release Ash Wednesday.

The controversy and media coverage of this cinematic event has been jaw-dropping. I am incredulous.

Let me clarify this: "every liberal Jewish organization."

G-d bless mightily the Orthodox and other Jews who stood against the hysteria and demonizing tactics, on Mel's behalf.

Toward Tradition was founded by Rabbi Lapin and this article is very representative of the kind of thing they publish and promote. They have a quarterly journal (which I used to receive but for some reason have not been getting) which includes articles by both Jews and Christians. They are worth checking out for their unified voice on conservative issues.

A few years ago when I lived in Seattle where Rabbi Lapin lives, I invited him to come to my men's morning Bible study to teach us about the Proverbs. He responded very kindly that there was nothing he liked more than to teach Scripture, but he declined my invitation because he was trying to meet a deadline for the completion of his first book. The title of that book when it came out was America's Real War, but at the time his working subtitle was An Orthodox Rabbi Makes the Case for Christianity, a name which for some reason the publishers wouldn't go along with.

Rabbi Lapin is a good friend of many Christian leaders and regularly appears on some Christian broadcasts such as D. James Kennedy and Jerry Falwell. He was very influential in the life and thinking of Michael Medved who, I understand, moved to Seattle in 1996 to be near Rabbi Lapin. Rabbi Lapin himself used to, and probably still does, have a radio program called "The Rabbi's Roundtable." He is one of the keenest and most gracious people you'll ever hear on talk radio. I'm still waiting for the day when his program will be more widely syndicated.

The same motivation is behind the movement to remove all evidence of the Judeo-Christian foundation of this country from public edifices.

I'm with you, outstanding. I love Rabbi Lapin. He has so much more class than those loudmouths like Foxman.

I was not planning on seeing this film, but my son told me he can't wait to see it (just to stick his finger in the eye of the ADL).

What I would really like, though, is for Mel or perhaps Steven Spielberg to make a historically accurate, based-on-original-sources movie about Rabbi Akiva. It is guaranteed to be a big hit because not only does it have a bloody, gory, shocking martyrdom scene but also a very powerful romance.

like a great historical teacher of Jewish law:

My third prediction is that the faith of millions of Christians will become more fervent as Passion uplifts and inspires them. Passion will propel vast numbers of unreligious Americans to embrace Christianity. The movie will one day be seen as a harbinger of America's third great religious reawakening.

Not to worry, Thougthomator. I should have qualified my post by saying ADL Jews. I have a long list of favorites and Lapin is up on the top, closely followed by Dennis Prager.

We must not allow some of those liberals to separate us because I think things will really heat up in our lifetimes.

I read this earlier in my e-mail and thought it was a great essay, but that the title was not quite appropriate. It doesn't really convey Rabbi Lapin's point.
