We didn't do a lot of group stuff...but for the most part, the Boy Scouts are a great organization. Unfortunately there are too many women involved with the local troup now, IMO. Used to be the Cubs were run by the moms...but the Dads and big brothers ran the Boy Scouts. It was very definitely a guy thing, and I think that was really good for the boys. Now there are lots of women, and not only that but instead of being a learning experience, it's more and more a competition, especially among the mothers...to push their kids to make rank as quickly as possible kinda to show each other up.

I'm being overly cynical...but it isn't the way it used to be.

I was realllly jealous of my brothers, I must say! Girl Scouts is nothing like Boy Scouts, and I didn't have anything equivalent to be part of.

I would have hated Girl Scouts. At that age I had nothing in common with other girls. I'd have rather joined the Boy Scouts, too... oh well. I did play softball until my inherent lack of talent forced me to stop.

That's what I think, though...it's not the way it "should" be imo.

I see the guys getting together, working on their achievements together. Instead, they get together, work on a craft, eat a snack and get their "assignment" to finish at home. We did progress at the same rate that way, though...so when one boy got a red bead, they pretty much all did (if you did what the lady said).

I wish there was more Dad involvement too, and this lady set up where one Sat a month the boys go on a field trip with their dads...that is where they went this last Sat...to the firestation.

So as irritated as I get with the lady, I really do think she is trying to address the problems.

And really, with all our help, she organized a stunning Blue and Gold banquet last night! When Matthew got rank pin, Joshua just burst into tears with pride. LOL He's very emotional.

Yeah, we're finding that a lot of the Girl Scouts stuff is 'self-esteem, touchy-feely" stuff. Drives Clare nuts! Though she's not into the camping out stuff that much, she'd like to do more of it than they do! We're trying to make things interesting for her Senior troop, going on trips and stuff. That's the group we took to NYC for the weekend last summer. We hope to take them to DC, maybe on the train. And they're considering a 'big trip' in their Senior year to Disney World!
