The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

It was a wonderful time. W is always a fun time, yes. So is Purple Q, a delightful gal, and so pretty too. And 2J is as zzaaannyyy as I anticipated, and then some. Such wonderful people all of you. I'm so thankful you guys could come down and moot for this. And so glad Bear and Rose could make it too. They are the most charming company. Enjoyable conversation always.
I'm trying hard to remember some of the highlights. 2J and W and Dana all had cameras I think and were snapping away the whole time, so I don't know what to expect when they find the chance to post them. lol. Just hoping no one snapped a pic of when I fell/sat on the floor, I had raised up from my seat slightly (I thought), and didn't realize it had folded up, and 2J yells something like "don't sit down there!!! It's stinky!!!" lol, she's a riot. (no I hadn't been drinking)
Let's see, as soon as the rodeo was done and Marty Stuart came on we started up hooting and whistling so much we got the attention of a crowd of other young things, about 16 yr old, that came over and joined us. They were a lot of fun, and very friendly. W and Q got some pics. After Marty was up for a while they brought on Ray Price, much to my surprised delight! He was in for Buck Owens who was sick or something. The little tweetsies next to me wanted to know if he was anybody important. and I gave them a quick lecture on the good ole boys of country music, and his place there. Oh the night life, ain't no good life, but it's his life, you know.
Connie Smith came on and did a couple, nice 'How Great Thou Art'. And then Dwight Yoakum came on and lit the place up. Marty Stuart joined him after a few numbers. We started on the second row and moved to the first that was mostly empty. The stage was turning around and I'm certain that Dwight was waiting until he faced our group to do most of his special moves and cute stuff. lol It was fun, and funny too.
Then we got back to the room and PQ and I took an opportunity while 2J was in the shower, and W had stepped outside, to dress up the room with the stuff she had brought for the birthday Kims. We got that stuff up Faaast.
That's about all I can think of right now. I know that every minute was full of funny little things, most of them any way.
I started this post 2 hours ago and kept getting distracted by such frivolities as work.

Glad to hear it, g'nad. Hope they find a good home for him - somewhere with a fence and no available chickens.

Get Yer Ya-Yas Out [FR Moderating Gripe Thread]
To: I Am Not A Mod
No complaints here! One only has to look at the foul language and wacky ideas on DU to see what we would be like without mods.
I have a question for the mods... I little bit ago, the issue came up that when threads get too big, they are too slow loading when the moderators have to get in them to delete posts.
We at the Hobbit Hole liked to run our threads to the limit, and hardly ever need moderating so it rarely has come up before, unless it is now a rule to not let it get too big. We were asked to start a new threads early the last two times... presumably because of this issue.
Folk there hate to move, but we don't want to be a bother either. Question is, how big is too big? We'd move without being told if we knew.
To: HairOfTheDog
Question is, how big is too big? We'd move without being told if we knew.
There's no perfect answer to this question. We have found that about 5000 replies is where the effects of us operating on a big thread have a noticeable impact on overall site response.
Not sure exactly what is happening, but when a moderator opens a thread, even just to read it, we have a bigger impact on the thread than a typical user does.
So, even if we are not attempting to change anything, we slow FR down for everyone.
If you would create a new thread at about 5000 replies and contact us via abuse report, we can lock the current thread and force replies to the new one.
Thanks

"If you would create a new thread at about 5000 replies "
That'll make you Hobbits have to move about once a week.
Times, they are a changin'.
To: Admin Moderator
Wow... I had to ask! -But 5,000 is so small! If we are good can we go 10,000? Current thread is at 15,000 with not one known abuse report! ~smiles real friendly like~

For those weak on details, these are the funny parts MBY left out and I remember. 2J and Wneighbor may have some of their own too.
Wn, MBY and I had to go pick up 2J at her parents motor home lot. We told 2J our EST would be 45 minutes. HAH! 5 oclock traffic in Houston. We arrived 1 and ½ hour later. 2J was frantic after a lady brought her a cup of hot chocolate with caramel in it. To put it mildly, 2J is a little bit (I wont say paranoid) cautious. She couldnt push MBY back into the car and get in herself fast enough! IT IS ANOTHER 2J STORY! For sure!
On the way to the concert, we passed a car garage with 3 cars that made Wneighbors mascara run! She was a little worked up at the sight of em. I think her words went something like, OMG thats a something something and a yada yada and OMG (squeal). It is hot in here (serious body fanning going on here). OMG Dana! I got chill bumps! Yah, I think it went something like that! TOO funny! I had to get her a taco bell napkin out of the glove box and turn on the AC full blast!
The birthday surprise set up was too funny also. When 2J came out from her shower she was like in lala land or something cuz I said Happy Birthday and she said Thanks! and went on her way packing up her clothes totally ignoring the fact that the ceiling had red and orange streamers on it, 4 walls had Happy Birthday banners, and the table was decorated. Then Wneighbor comes in from going to check out the hot tub, being freaked out by creepy man, shivering from the cold, talking a typical 85 mph and in mid sentence says, You fools! You totally pulled this off with out me knowing.
Lets see what else
Oh yeah! 2J REALLY loves her bagels. We found out first hand. After only like 4 hours of sleep, we all got up and went to eat our continental breakfast in the lobby. 2J brought her own bagel and apple butter of course. I am certain she did not take one bite without giving a good, wholehearted Mmmmmm! after it!
