I'm kinda' partial to Kimber Arms. They're a tad more spendy than Colt or others, but not when you consider the smithing it would take to make a Colt shoot like a Kimber does right outta the box.

If its a regular carry thing you're after, there is a very nice Kimber officer's model, and it'll probly shoot better than most .45's with longer barrels, but it's nice and small and doesn't have protruding parts to press marks into the softer parts of the wearer... :-)

I have a Kimber Custom that shoots better than some Gold Cups that I've fired, and for a fraction of the money. Yes, they are a dead knock-off of Colt 1911 but they build them to far tighter tolerances than Colt does. They don't rattle like a Colt does.

I don't practice as often as I should, but with that Kimber I can put four magazines into six inches, rapid fire at twenty yards. It's a tribute to Kimber, not to me as a shooter... it's just a darn well balanced bullet pushing machine.

Interesting choice. But I really can't say if it is the right choice for them or not.

I think the military has realized that a flat-top M-16 is more vesatile, considering all the stuff you can hang on it. You get better ballistic performance out of the longer barrel, but the carbine looks cooler. I guess the Marines just don't want to be bothered with having a short version in their system.

I'd definitely recommend at least trying Lovecraft, if for no other reason than the one Bear mentions, he's a big influence on a lot of other authors. HPL is sort of a mix of fantasy, SF, and horror, some stories emphasizing one over the other. His fantasy works, inspired by Lord Dunsany (another great writer who also influenced Tolkien), are mostly in his earlier stuff, collected in Dagon and Other Macabre Tales. Later in his career he gave his fantasy an SF premise and produced a unique SF-horror hybrid that, however, still maintains a fantasy aura about it, a sense of otherworldliness. IMO his best story is "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" so that's one I'd recommend as an introduction. Most of his other best stories are in the Dunwich Horror and Others collection I linked before. These are mostly short stories; he's also got some longer novellas collected in At the Mountains of Madness. I'd say try a few of the shorter stories in Dunwich Horror first and get a feel for whether you like his style or not. Sam, he's got a few stories that touch on painting in the premise, such as "Pickman's Model" and "The Picture in the House", which you might find interesting from that perspective. Other than that, besides "Shadow Over Innsmouth", I'd also recommend as representative stories "Call of Cthulhu", "The Colour Out of Space", "The Dunwich Horror", "The Whisperer in Darkness", and "Under the Pyramids". For a more fantasy-oriented story you might try "Polaris", "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath", "The Silver Key", or "Through the Gates of the Silver Key".

I found that I was doubting myself on the description of the M-4 as a carbine. Is that truly the case? I thought it was but then had second thoughts.

I can't like a .45 because my hands are too small to hold it properly. I hear though, that someone makes a smaller capacity .45 with a smaller grip. If I run across one of those, then maybe!

If you're talking autoloader, I can't recommend the Glock .45s highly enough. They have a great grip shape, even for small hands. The ergonomics are great, and I find it more comfortable to shoot than the Browning M-1911 style. I know that's heresy, but it works for me.

If you want a revolver, try Smith&Wesson, Ruger or Taurus in double action. I don't recommend single action revolvers except as curiosities.
