Word For The Day, Monday, January 12, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

arrogate \AIR-uh-gayt\,verb:
arrogating, arrogates, arrogated; transitive verb
arrogative; adjective
arrogatively; adverb
arrogation, arrogator; noun

1. To claim or seize without right or justification; to appropriate.
2. To ascribe on behalf of another in an unwarranted manner.
3. To assume, or claim as one's own, unduly, proudly, or presumptuously; to make undue claims to, from vanity or baseless pretensions to right or merit

The most sinister dimension of this form of 'terror' was that it became an intrinsic component of Fascist and Nazi governance, executed at the behest of, and in complete subservience to, the ruling political party of the land -- which had arrogated to itself complete, total control of the country and its people.
--Bruce Hoffman, Inside Terrorism

Etymology [Latin arrog re, arrog t- : ad-, ad- + rog re, to ask; see reg- in Indo-European Roots.]

Where do I start?

#1 it's Monday, which is bad enough in itself.

#2 I got a call at 12:30 AM from the monitoring service that the alarm was going off at my business. I go to the office and someone had smashed the glass door and stolen one of the computers. Nobody was available to come fix the damage. There are 24 hour glass and door repair services but they were all booked up. They didn't know if they could come anytime during the night, and since it was an emergency call, they wanted an extra $500, and that is just to secure the door, not even fix it. So I stayed at the office until 3 AM when someone came to spell me for the rest of the night. The glass/door company is coming this afternoon sometime and I am beat.

The cops wouldn't even take fingerprints, since they said there would be way too many latent prints to find anything that they could use. If it was a residence, they could narrow all the prints down to the people in the home and the people who would have broken in.

So basically, they have conceded that they will probably never catch the people/person who did it. My guess is that they won't even try. Their solution was that we buy roll-down shutters.

I'm sorry to hear about the theft. I hope they cut themselves to pieces while stealing from you and that the computer locks up on them as soon as they try and use it.

Dubs is staying a mile away. Constitution Day is also staying at the Days Inn.
Yo! CD! Tell us about the Days Inn. How far away is it from Crystal Gateway??

Sounds like the Days in would only be 2 blocks away from the Marriott, it is on the same street.

It will have to be after we get back - or at least for me - I don't have a laptop.

There is an "Internet Row" in the conference hall, you shouldn't have to wait too long.

My wife, (registered Democrat), just received a letter from Serpenthead, fund-raising for the Democratic National Committee, Attn: James Carville

Thirty-ninth sentence says, "You can sit on your hands and watch the Bush campaign raise $250 million dollars to fund a vicious, relentless attack on our presidential nominee."

Sounds good to me! The funny thing is, They don't know, or care, who it's going to be!

But the forty-fourth sentence really raised my hackles! "Or you can take the power to name Supreme Court justices out of his hands."

Now that's scary! And, last time I checked, unconstitutional. I remember swearing an oath to defend the constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. Mr. Carville, are you our enemy? (By the way, that is also arrogation.)

What's that? This isn't WTF Day -- It's Word For The Day -- WTFD ... WFTD, I can claim dyslexia.

About 2 years ago a friend of mine got a similar call about a broken front window on his antique shop. That guy wound up in the hospital for quite sometime from the slicing he took from the plate glass.

This case was a bit different he'd had an argument with his buddies in the bar down the street because he was so drunk. The arguement was because the buddies had taken his keys away.

It had a good ending, though - the kid learned a lesson, was remorseful and volunteered to pay the cost of replacing the window - needless to say my friend is a softy, and believed the kid so didn't press charges. Some of the rest of us were a bit sceptical. 3 weeks later, my friends intuition that he was a good kid who made a stupid mistake proved true - when he received a check in the mail accompanied by a leter of apology from the man.

Cool - thanks for the info.

It's been so many years since I've been to a conference such as this - the hotels didn't offer those kinds of services back then!!!!!

In DC???????? I seriously doubt they offer anything free there!!!!

But I hadn't thought of that - I've never used one, in fact I've never even seen one.

Then there was the football player who went to the University of Miami, who got the Miami ibis tattoed on his left butt cheek before he flunked out. So he went to Florida State, where he got a Seminole tattoed on his right butt cheek before he flunked out of there. Then he went to Florida: when he went in for his physical, the doc told him to drop his trousers. Seeing his decorated butt, he said, "I recognize WhyisaTexasgirlinPA in the middle, but what are the two tattoes supposed to be?"

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAAA!!!

(Actually, the original joke mentioned Steve Spurrier, not the Whyisa...)
