Return of the King - Opening night LIVE THREAD
Lord of the Rings - Yahoo Movies ^ | 12/17/03 | self

Posted on 12/17/2003 4:25:16 AM PST by ppaul

OPENING NITE: Just returned from a midnite showing of The Return of the King. Awesome. If you were wondering whether it would stack up to I & II - you won't be disappointed. One part that all red-blooded FReepers will enjoy: The good guys are referred to as "men of the West." And, eagles save the day. I won't say more and spoil it for you. Given Saddam's capture, this movie comes out at a most opportune time. Well worth seeing twice - at least.

How long was it, time-wise?

How was the acting, Sam-wise?

: )

A crowded theater is always bad news for watching a film.

In general I would agree. However, my son and I saw the trilogy yesterday in Richmond. Granted, no screaming babies, very few middle schoolers.

The silence with FOTR started was almost reverent. We got a little noisier throughout the day, but it was mostly cheering for the movie. No one was goofing off.

A great way to avoid crowds for any movie (and my plan for seeing ROTK with my wife): go straight from work the weekday after it opens. Most people aren't heading to the movie right after the work day ends because they're going home and eating and stuff. I've used that trick to see the first two LOTR and the first two Potter movies in half empty theaters, the film hasn't been destroyed by lazy projectionists improperly rewinding it yet, and you get in at matinee prices.

Same here.

Although someone actually brought a newborn to the whole thing. The baby didn't make sound all day/night long. Well, he started to fuss once but the parents scooted him out real quick. Benadryl's great stuff. ;^)

I complimented the dad on his baby's behavior.

It is just too bad that Vigo Mortgansen (Aragorn) and Ian McKellan (Gandalf) are so virulently anti American.

That just makes it all the more sweet to see our side's views being championed so well by characters portrayed by these actors.

BTW, I know about Viggo's comments, but other than his militant homosexuality what has Ian McKellan done or said to show he is anti-American?

A crowded theater is always bad news for watching a film.

Not always.
The crowd last night was well-mannered.
There were no "crying babies" either.
You'd have to be one hell of a sicko to take a baby to LOTR.
Anyway, dont miss seeing LOTR on a big screen - it's the only way!

Might need a new catagory.

Apparently, the Admin. Moderator thought son and relegated this thread to "The Hobbit Hole" where few will ever see it and respond.
Thanks.

Sam absolutely RULED. I honestly wish the Academy could give four-plus Best Actor awards: Astin first, McKellen, Serkis, and what the heck, all the others. But Astin WAS Sam, dead-on, could not ask for one atom more.

I'd go further than you. I think movie viewing is positively enhanced in a packed theater -- if it's a decent audience. Ours was excellent, obviously hardcore LOTR lovers. Through the first two, they yelled and applauded at appropriate moments, were hushed for the rest -- and after opening applause were almost totally hushed through ROTK, except a couple of unavoidable outbursts of applause. (If you've seen it, you might guess.)

I hate distracting, noisy, disrespectful audiences; but don't care much either for stodgy, too-"white" I-don't-participate mausoleum-audiences, either.

Favorite part Dan?

My favorite smile was Sam's wedding, because I didn't know we were gonna get that! That was a surprise, and I had seen every spoiler. I loved the way that was edited, and that Elijah did the voiceover wrap up. I thought they were going to use Galadriel to book-end the film. Can't remember when I heard that.

Most intense part was the trip up the mountain. Tears then.

Yes you are right about that. My wife gave me a severe scolding for having TT on while my 3 year old was in the room. He didn't see any of the battle scenes. However, he's got a Gollum impression down pretty good.

We aren't sure when a good age would be to let our kids see these movies. I watched whatever I wanted when I was a kid, which is why I spent half of my childhood terrified of the basement, the hallway, the upstairs, and the crawl-space under my bed!
