.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

  MOST ANY SUNDAY

after the gentle rain
the slick streets steaming,
in the re-appearing sun,
fill with familiar sounds
but it was not in vain
        the arid earth kept screaming
        until the clouds would quench
        these thirsty grounds

even heaven wet with gold
is labored in its chore
to outshine this Isle
that holds me in its sway
no dream ere bought or sold
        could please me any more
        than pausing here awhile
        in this resurrected day.

   SIMPLE THINGS

the hanging gardens of Babylon
are not so great to me
I'd rather view the beauty of
ripe mangoes on my tree

the Pyramids of Egypt
a wonder to bestow
I'd rather watch the setting sun
ignite the sea aglow

the Jaj Mahal would take your breath
a tribute to mans love
I'd rather look and wonder of
a million stars above

of all mans wonders in the world
of concrete glass and board
I'd rather see the simple things
created by the Lord.

Here's one for fun, (who say the woman isn't mighter then the sword!)

I'm off to work now,(12 hour shifts for the next three days), and a host of bad weather for fun! I will likely get back on board thursday with new poem(s), and see what nifty stuff you all have posted then.

Trike

Vanity Before The Fall

Sargoth was a immense bronze scaled dragon,
of mighty power and searing fire.
He lived in the largest cave on Mount Elgon,
in the land of burning mountains, beyond the Misock Mire.

Old as his stony hearted mountain tower,
and the very strongest of his kind.
He was gifted with arcane and fearful powers,
that made him the bane of all mankind.

Each raid was truly terrible, slashing claw and fire’s sear,
and always coming out of the dark, just before the dawn.
The inhabitants of the land, came to know true fear,
victims to the cruel excesses of the mighty fire dragon.

Rending slashing claws and the earthquake of lashing tail,
and fire, always fire that consumed the luckless land.
Always savaging the hard work of man in every dale,
until there amid the pain, rose a cry for a hero’s hand.

But who would take the challenge of fire,
who would dare the slashing might.
Who would shoulder the task and not tire,
who would stand against him and fight?

None stood out, and many cried at each savage blow,
and as they moaned their fear , so many died.
Until one day, one stood with quiet strength and said ‘ I’ll go’,
a single woman walked away, facing what few had tried.

She braved the dangers and hardships of the epic journey foregone,
and finally after 2 moons, crossed the Misock Mire, though lame.
It was on a bright clear day she finally came to stand on Mount Elgon,
and in a strong young voice, to call the dreaded dragon’s name.

‘Sargoth, Sargoth, please fly no higher, yelled the little human woman,
‘for there is a great question of you that I must ask’,
Intrigued, the dragon circled down to see this puny human,
who should be hiding from his fire, well he’d soon take her to task.

Settling down around the trembling lass,
he studied her a moment, enjoying her quaking fear.
He demanded her question she has asked for with such brass,
still admiring her for her courage, outstripping all her peers.

‘What do you ask’, he demanded and readied his mighty flame as of old,
‘What could you think to ask the greatest of mankind’s bane?’
All the while, his eyes of fire orange were shot with burnished gold,
clearly he was filled with a mighty and overpowering destine.

She stood her ground and pointed at his flame,
‘I come to ask which is mightier, the ice, or the fire?
She pointed to the glacier on the side of Mount Elgon’s frame,
the mighty sheet of snow and ice that capped the mountain higher.

‘Foolish human, my fire is the greatest, far more then ice could ever be,
she looked at the glacier and looked wryly back at him.
He yelled, ‘It melts the ice into water at just the touch of my breath you see,
and again she looked to the ice, and the challenge offended him, to see her doubt even so slim.

With thunderous might he spread wing, and in a flash, winged up high,
to challenge the ice, and show this puny human his truly awesome might.
Coming to ground, he sat in front of the glacier and gave a great battle cry,
‘I shall blow the mightiest flame I have ever blown, and destroy the ice as is my right.

Huffing up his breath, he concentrated the heat inside his frame,
till his sides glowed with the power of the heat contained within.
He vented all that power in a roaring flash, as he spewed forth a terrible flame,
that swept the ice wall in a glowing wave of mighty heat, amid a mighty din.

The ice softened in that hellish terrible heat,
as snow turned to steam, and ice to water in a stream,
The power of the blast soon had water running around his feet,
proving his power over the ice was mighty in the extreme.

As he stood there admiring the mighty feat he had just done,
he realized the ice was moving, started by the heat and waters flow.
It moved in an avalanche of power, coming down at him, and he slipped as he started to run,
but the ice was faster, and the falling glacier took him to the valley floor so very far below.

The tired but jubilant woman stood on the side of mighty Mount Elgon,
and watched the full of the mighty bronze dragon’s fall,
and gave heartfelt thanks to all the ancient gods,
that his vanity was a great, as the power that was his to call.

"after the gentle rain"
...... Sounds so relaxing .... I enjoy afternoons spent listening to soft rain.

"I'd rather see the simple things created by the Lord."
...... Absolutely .. nothing prettier than what God has given.

Thank you for two more lovely poems.

Good afternoon everybody. Hope you all are having a great Sunday.

The Phœnix and the turtle

Here the anthem doth commence:
Love and constancy is dead;
Phœnix and the turtle fled
In a mutual flame from hence.

So they lov'd, as love in twain
Had the essence but in one;
Two distincts, division none:
Number there in love was slain.

Hearts remote, yet not asunder;
Distance, and no space was seen
'Twixt the turtle and his queen:
But in them it were a wonder.

So between them love did shine,
That the turtle saw his right
Flaming in the phœnix' sight;
Either was the other's mine.

Property was thus appall'd,
That the self was not the same;
Single nature's double name
Neither two nor one was call'd.

Reason, in itself confounded,
Saw division grow together;
To themselves yet either neither,
Simple were so well compounded,

That it cried, 'How true a twain
Seemeth this concordant one!
Love hath reason, reason none,
If what parts can so remain.'

Whereupon it made this threne
To the phœnix and the dove,
Co-sapremes' and stars of love,
As chorus to their tragic scene.

-- William Shakespeare

Some cheer:

Hillary Clinton died and went to heaven.

As she stood in front of Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates, she saw a huge wall of clocks behind him.

She asked, "What are all those clocks?"

Saint Peter answered, "Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock.

Every time you lie, the hands on your clock will move.

"Oh," said Hillary, "whose clock is that?"

"That's Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved indicating that she never told a lie."

"Whose clock is that?"

"That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have only moved twice telling us that Abe
only told 2 lies in his entire life."

"Where's Bill's clock?" Hillary asked.

"Bill's clock is in Jesus' office. He's using it as a ceiling fan.

Looking forward to hearing from you on Thursday. Don't let those 12 hour days quell that creative talent.

"Vanity Before The Fall" was fun. Thank you for sharing it!

"who say the woman isn't mightier than the sword!"

If not mightier, then at least smarter. Brains will win over vanity every time!

Well, I find lyrics, sometimes, at 'Leoslyrics.com' - sometimes correct lyrics sometimes not.

Small dryspell on the inspiration at the moment, prolly due to the headache I've been stuck with for two weeks now.
Docs can never find a cause for them, so there's no way to reliably deal with it.
Though, oddly, chocolate helps.
