Utah Valley University will cancel classes Thursday as the campus marks one year since Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was assassinated there.
The university said it is closing its public campus in Orem, Utah, to give students, faculty and staff time for reflection on the anniversary of his murder.
TPUSA will return to the campus Thursday evening for its “Freedom Built to Last Memorial” at the UCCU Center.
The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will also be livestreamed online.
“The gathering will honor Charlie as a faith-filled husband, father, and defender of free speech with a memorial that serves as a deliberate act of remembrance and a call for students and supporters to continue his life’s work,” Turning Point USA said.
Meanwhile, far-left activists are preparing to protest a memorial event being held in his honor.
In an open letter, the Students for a Democratic Society accused university officials of planning to “hand over our campus” to TPUSA
The activists also attacked Utah Valley University President Jon Anderson, claiming he had “aligned himself with the interests” of TPUSA by allowing the organization to hold the memorial on campus.
The group went further, accusing Turning Point USA of being “openly racist and antagonistic” and claiming the organization was promoting “a narrative of victimhood” by commemorating its assassinated founder.
The protesters also claimed they would be “further negatively affected by allowing TPUSA to occupy our campus on that day.”
A leaked recording also showed SDS members planning to make the event as “uncomfortable as possible for people to get in.”
Anderson has defended the university’s decision, pointing out the school is not sponsoring the memorial.
“As an institution, it’s important that we stay apolitical, that we don’t jump in the fray,” Anderson said.
“Any entity could’ve used that space, and they chose to have that day. And we allowed them to do that.”
The university will provide security because of the size of the event and the potential for confrontation.
Last week, a judge ruled that 23-year-old Tyler Robinson can stand trial for aggravated murder and six other charges.
If convicted, he will eligible for the death penalty.

Killed Charlie
Tried to kill Trump
Blew up the twin towers.
This what we are up against.
What kind of warped and stunted personality would oppose honoring this American hero.
People who call him a Nazi..............

It took a year to decide if he should stand for trial. Looks like 23-year-old Tyler will die of old age before the trial is over.
Good for them unless it’s just an excuse to turn the event into an anti Trump/Kirk/MAGA rally.
The animals are not people... They just can’t leave it alone. In the end, thye will reap the rewards of what they’ve done and who they are. Hell will be waiting with open arms. They’ve done it to themselves and my normal stance of not wishing ill to anyone, has just evaporated for these pigs.
They are/were so desperately afraid of discussion and decency. It is like cryptonite to them. I just don’t get it. I never will.
Oh the horror. But if The Communist Democrats of America - oops, sorry, I mean the DSA - came, you want EVERYONE to be there - or they'll be expelled!!

Maybe he supports the First Amendment, the right to assemble freely and the right to free speech...Morons, do you think that he supports the FIRST AMENDMENT??
Oh sorry, THINKING is difficult for you. You just parrot what is fed to you...
Some people are going to post some evil stupid things tomorrow and end their careers.
Commies knew that if they killed Charlie, they could get the youth vote back, Charlie was the one that helped convince young people that communism is NOT the answer, now that Charlie is gone, there is no one to guide them
Murdered for starting to speak out against a certain middle east country and now TP is run by a trans-woman.
I will be hosting Derek Chauvin day, Darren Wilson Day, Daniel Penny day, and George Zimmerman days. All heroes who protected us from violent career criminals. Let the punk college students protest that while they celebrate their democrat party assassin murder a man who never hurt anyone.
“hand over our campus” to TPUSA” is better than handing over the campus to godless communists, pro-abortion teachers and anti-Christian groups.
