How free childcare started winning US elections: ‘Overnight, people realized how essential it was’
The Guardian ^ | July 29, 2026 | Sunny Patel

In a matter of weeks, Francesca Hong, an unlikely candidate for governor in one of the country’s most heated battleground states, will test a message that is at once radical and, to many, incredibly practical: the government should help pay for childcare.

“When we talk about free childcare, you can connect to folks whether it’s on an economic argument or just purely that it’s the right thing to do for our kids,” said Hong, a democratic socialist running in Wisconsin’s Democratic primary on 11 August. “I always like to remind folks: if we don’t take care of our kids, who’s going to take care of us?”

For 50 years, US childcare policy lived in the welfare drawer with programs such as Head Start, a free early learning initiative for low-income families, and subsidies focused on keeping poor mothers in the workforce. Anything broader was often shut down by conservatives advocating for families’ “personal choice” over government-run childcare. And while Democratic lawmakers, often women, campaigned on the need for affordable childcare – presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris made it central to their platforms – they had little success.

Then something shifted as the cost of care surpassed college tuition and a pandemic hangover pushed caregivers, and their wallets, to their limits: childcare became a middle-class problem that could no longer be ignored. In November, Zohran Mamdani made universal childcare a cornerstone of his New York mayoral campaign, and two centrists, Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill, won the governorships in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively, running on the same plank. In March, New Mexico became the first state to offer free childcare for all. In the nation’s capital, Janeese Lewis-George won the mayoral primary this summer with universal childcare among her top priorities.

"Free childcare" (aka, government-sponsored daycare) is a disaster. It's yet another way that the Left separates parents from their children and puts the children in a situation where they can be molded into graven images of a few psycho daycare nannies.

Same exact principle as giving welfare to Black families in the 1960s. The goal was do break up families to empower the state.

There’s no such thing as free childcare...or free healthcare...or free anything. Take your collectivist ideas and jam em’ where the sun don’t shine. Leeches. You had em, you pay for raising them.

Many decades ago, China was considered barbarian because they allowed abortion and sometimes left female babies on a hillside to die. The Soviet Union was considered horrible because they put babies in daycare nurseries so that all the mothers could go to work. In the USA we had Moms who raised their own children, at least when they were babies. No one will ever love a child like its parent.

Does anyone still wonder why Socialism “suddenly” became popular in the US? Recently, article after article has been written about how the DSA and Socialism all the sudden are on the march and gaining followers as if its a surprise. Yet the biggest election vote-getter that the Dems have had for the past several decades is to find something that is costing Americans a lot of money and offer to have the government pay for it so its “free” for a large segment of the voting population. For years, it was healthcare. Now its childcare. And rather than offer market-based alternatives, Republicans run and hide or pussy-foot around the issue, or offer Dem-lite programs. Gimme gimme gimme and have someone else pay for it is the new American Dream.

One visit to a U.S. Post Office or a state motor vehicle agency is all I need to know that I don’t trust the government in any matters more important than selling me a stamp or renewing my vehicle registration.

“There’s no such thing as free childcare”

If the doctors, nurses, facility are donating time, equipment, you could maybe say it’s free

But no one is donating services.

‘Free childcare’ is worth about what you pay for it.

I wouldn’t say we support it. We don’t have a choice in the matter....at least not right now.

Stop using “free childcare”. That doesn’t exist. What you’re really saying is taxpayer-funded childcare.
