In another case of “the internet is not real life,” Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” opened above expectations last weekend, dominating the box office with a massive $264 million global launch. This despite a months-long campaign from far right individuals on social media lamenting Nolan’s decision to cast Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy (a character who is in the film for all of three minutes) and Elliot Page as Achilles (Page did not, in fact, play Achilles).
The conservative backlash intensified when Elon Musk endorsed complaints against “The Odyssey” and kept tweeting about how the film was doomed to fail.
And here we are, far from failure.

Why would they cast Matt Damon in this movie?
I could have watch it today. I watched Obsession instead. I won’t support Cultural Sabotage.

"Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things." (Phil. 4:8)
There is a Muppet version also...
On the flip side, Samual Jackson’s “Snakes on a Plane” was an Internet tsunami but bombed when it arrived in theaters.
It’s a little to early to conclude this considering that imax theaters were sold out a year in advance. Let’s see what next week brings.
I haven’t been to a movie theater since 1999 when I took my 11 year old daughter to see Star Wars : The Phantom Menace in Tokyo . Not my idea ; she wanted to see it .
Hollywood is still dead or nearly so. This movie won’t change that.
Didn’t defeat this troll. Nolan = Leni Reifenstahl.
Any one want to bet that it doesn’t break even????????
I think Nolan was going for name recognition to get buzz going.
Though Matt can be a very good actor.
Yup, I fully agree. I would say to wait until mid August (well I have to, that’s when it will be playing at the movie theater near me!).
Its box office earnings are $300 million so far, it needs to earn at least $500 million to break even. It’s not a superflop like Supergirl, but it’s too early to declare it a hit or anything else just yet
Nolan doesn’t need name recognition. 43% went to see the movie because Nolan directed it - the reason with the highest percent.
For me, it’s not about cultural sabotage, revisionist history or bastardizing classical literature.
It’s about being tired of having trannies and homos in everything.
It’s about the constant social engineering, where every natural disaster story has to be a lecture on man-made climate change, and every drama has to depict women and/or people of color getting screwed over by white men.
It’s about having heard Matt Damon’s stupid opinion one too many times and not being able to stand the guy.
We were told Ellen Page played a character that she didn’t really play, then they got all bent out of shape about us pointing out that she shouldn’t play the character that they told us she played?
And then trying to somehow shame us?
And if Helen of Troy was in the movie for 3 hours or 3 seconds, she was played by the wrong actor. Why are they telling us that they cast an acting genius of she’s given only 3 minutes of screen time? That only proves our point that she was cast solely for the color of her skin
No, dear friends... We are not wrong here. Screw these people.
Thank you and it turns out their roles are very minor in terms of screen time.
