I had always thought of Dearborn, Michigan, as the home of agricultural harvest machinery, owned and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. When Ford was still building farm and industrial tractors, including the Ford-Ferguson 9N and the iconic Ford 8N, Dearborn Machine was building the attachments that were mounted on these tractors.
But something happened in Dearborn, between the halcyon years of the 1940’s to the present day. Ford gave up their presence in the manufacture of agricultural and industrial machinery, and moved operations out of Dearborn, creating a circumstance similar to what happened in nearby Flint, Michigan.
Both these cities were a microcosm of what happened to Detroit itself in the intervening years. It is not clear what happened that caused Dearborn in particular to become a magnet for various Islamic immigrants, but the falling real estate values may have been a contributing factor. The settlement of the Islamic population has done little to improve real estate values, kind of a reverse gentrification has taken place, and now, real gentrification is virtually impossible.

But it is easy to believe how Ford would have planned such a strategy to prevent, as he did, the formation of any unions at any of his facilities. He resisted for many years, until after the death of his son Edsel in the 1940’s.
I didn’t realize that the influx of Arabs into Michigan dated back to over a century ago. Ford also stood out among major industrialists in being willing to hire a lot of black workers. He did so because he hoped, as your post indicates about the Arab workers, that they would be “more compliant and less likely to complain or unionize”. Neither move worked out so well for Michigan’s demographics.

In my south Alabama, locally owned gym this morning there was an about 14 year old anchor baby with his illegal mother. He was wearing a shirt that had “Mexico” written on the front and back and a Mexican flag on the sleeve. That just pissed me off. I hate to see foreign flags displayed in our country. I know it’s rhetorical, but if they love Mexico so much WTF are they doing here?
Mexican Americans have made Tucson the foodie capital of the world, which is good indeed!
However, the muslim Arabs of Dearborn and the muslim Somalis of Minneapolis are another matter!
