Rice University, a private research university in Houston, Texas, is offering multiple courses centered on pop star Taylor Swift, including one class examining far-left themes such as “American nationalism and whiteness” through Swift’s lyrics and public image.
Rice will offer “COLL 118 Mastermind: The Taylor Swift Eras” this fall, in which students will analyze Swift’s albums as “primary texts” and examine “how a single artist can shape global culture and shift industry standards.”
“We will decode the history, narrative themes, and lyrical depth of each distinct ‘Era’ to understand how she builds a cohesive universe through her work,” the course description reads.
The class also explores her transition across music genres and her dispute over ownership of her master recordings.
According to the course description, “From the country-pop of her youth to the synth-heavy landscapes of 1989 and the atmospheric indie-folk of folklore, her discography serves as a chronological record of personal and creative growth.”
Rice is also listing a second Swift-focused course in its 2026-27 catalog titled “COLL 167 Miss Americana: The Evolution and Lyrics of Taylor Swift.” This seminar course will focus on Swift’s songwriting alongside discussions about “femininity and gender,” “politics and social impact,” and “American nationalism and whiteness.”
Students in the class will examine all 10 of Swift’s albums and complete written responses, participate in classroom discussions, and write a final essay analyzing one of her songs.
“Hailed as the ‘Songwriter of the Decade,’ Taylor Swift has been at the forefront of pop culture for years, making her an enduring presence in a fast-paced industry. The name itself brings both appeal and aversions, yet what really shines about the star is her songwriting,” the catalog description for the course reads.
While it is listed in the 2026-27 course catalog, Rice has not specified whether the “Miss Americana” course will be offered during the fall or spring semester. The university previously offered the same course in fall 2023.
The university’s undergraduate tuition cost for the 2026-27 academic year exceeds $70,000. The university estimates the total cost of attendance to be $97,000 after fees, housing, meals, books, and personal expenses are included.

COLL 118 001 (CRN: 16356) Long Title: MASTERMIND: THE TAYLOR SWIFT ERAS
Description: Whether you are a fan or a skeptic, Taylor Swift’s career serves as the ultimate study in artistic reinvention and narrative control. Over the past two decades, Swift has transformed from a teenage Nashville songwriter into a global cultural phenomenon, not just by writing hits, but by masterfully navigating the transition between genres. From the country-pop of her youth to the synth-heavy landscapes of 1989 and the atmospheric indie-folk of folklore, her discography serves as a chronological record of personal and creative growth. In this course, we will explore Swift’s evolution by treating her albums as primary texts. We will decode the history, narrative themes, and lyrical depth of each distinct “Era” to understand how she builds a cohesive universe through her work. Beyond the songs, we will examine her impact on the music industry, specifically through her high-profile battle for her master recordings, a move that redefined artist agency and ownership in the modern age. Ultimately, students will analyze how a single artist can shape global culture and shift industry standards through the power of a single, evolving story.
Fools and their money are soon parted.
I think there is a reason why an ivy league degree means far less today than it did in the past.
How about a course on watermelon eating, chicken loving, cop hating people.
Oh my
Swift hardly even has a high school education
As a potential employer, what do you think would cross my mind when I saw these courses on your transcript?

“Undergraduate tuition at Rice University is $71,140 for the 2026-2027 academic year for incoming and upper-division students, with mandatory fees of $984. Combined with room, board, and personal expenses, the total estimated cost of attendance is around $92,000 annually”
This is a great for employers. If a potential hire took this course, they are not the person to hire. Think of it as a snowflake self-identification mark.
This college course might run a neck-and-neck competition with Basket Weaving 101 for the most worthless college courses of all times. (Perhaps not. Maybe it would go to “Achievements in the Advancement of Lesbianism in a Modern Androcentric Society.”)

The worrisome part is that the guy studying chemistry and the guy studying Taylor Swift will have the same number of votes in the 2028 presidential election.

Outside of the US, nobody cares about Taylor Swift.
Yep.
Yup.
