Growing up in Pakistan until my late teens, I never encountered a Jewish person. My passport permitted me to travel the world, but not to Israel, and so my intrigue at my first encounter with a Jewish person when I was in my twenties in New York was palpable.

It was reciprocated, as he had never met a Muslim socially, but he was nevertheless taken aback by how little I knew of the Holocaust and Jewish history. I picked up a copy of Primo Levi’s account of surviving Auschwitz, If This is a Man, which began my education about people I was taught to think of as religious opponents, and of a land still riven by conflict…

As a minority, if you are lucky enough to be born here, or have made a choice to live here, there has to be a deal: in order to avail yourself of our protections, the quid pro quo has to be that you uphold the rights of other minorities as well — irrespective of your religious or cultural heritage.

I know that I’ll be accused by my co-religionists of seeking “demonstrations of loyalty” or demanding patriotism, which is itself supposedly un-British. But the time has come now for Muslims to have a louder voice. There need to be stronger statements in support of Jewish citizens from those other than our home secretary, Shabana Mahmood...

The government’s recent action plan — Protecting What Matters: Towards a more confident, cohesive, and resilient United Kingdom — stressed the importance of social cohesion, and set out the steps the government is taking to achieve this aim…

As part of this, the next step may be for the government to consider a “moratorium” on pro-Palestinian marches, for the time being…

The author is a woman, titled Baroness of Margravine, having been made a life peer in the House of Lords. Her ethnically British husband Robert Falkner is a professor at London School of Economics. From this comfortable, educated position, she can afford to be tolerant in her outlook, and seems to understand what the “deal” is. Her interests lie in not stoking backlash against muslims in UK due to virulent anti-semitism.
