Austin Justice @AustinJustice Memphis was one of the most dangerous cities in America. It’s now becoming a model for how to fight crime when you have a terrible DA.

From the peak: - Murders down 47% - Carjackings down 48% - Robberies down 51%. - Vehicle theft down 80%.

What changed:

1. State troopers took over interstate patrol, freeing up local officers.

2. Police launched focused initiatives targeting fugitives, violent repeat offenders, and gang members.

3. National Guard, federal agents, and US Marshals came in and made 9,000+ arrests, including 400+ gang members. Plus 629 illegal firearms seized, 150 missing children located.

4. Technology filled the gaps. Police deployed license plate readers citywide, expanded drone use, and opened a downtown command center. A cancer center went from a crime attempt every other week to none.

Overall crime is now down more than 43% compared to the same period last year

Memphis has a long way to go and remains a dangerous city. Its DA is still dismissing 3 out of every 4 felony cases. In fact, the state legislature just passed a bill to audit and potentially remove him.

But the city is showing that a rogue DA doesn't have to be a death sentence for public safety. Flood the streets with law enforcement, target repeat offenders, and make arrests faster than he can dismiss them.

Our DA is a joke. He regularly dismisses charges for criminals.

I think of Memphis and I think of those cops that beat Tyre Nichols to death....

AI

You’re almost certainly referring to Tyre Nichols, but the “having sex with the wife of a police officer” part was a rumor that his family publicly denied. The verified case is that Nichols was fatally beaten by Memphis officers after a traffic stop on January 7, 2023, and died three days later from blunt-force trauma to the head.

What happened
Nichols, 29, was pulled over in Memphis and then pursued on foot; officers caught him and repeatedly punched, kicked, pepper-sprayed, and struck him with a baton while he was on the ground. Medical examiners ruled the manner of death a homicide caused by blunt-force trauma, with additional extensive injuries to his neck, arms, legs, and torso.

Officers involved
The officers directly charged in the fatal beating were Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith. A sixth officer, Preston Hemphill, was fired but not criminally charged because prosecutors said he was not present at the scene of the fatal injuries.

Legal outcome
The case led to both federal and state prosecutions. In federal court, former officers were convicted of felonies tied to Nichols’ death, and as of May 2025 three former Memphis officers were acquitted on state charges.

About the rumor
The affair rumor was widely circulated early on, but Nichols’ stepfather denied it, and reporting said the officers’ videos did not reference any alleged affair. The evidence and court records tie the violence to the traffic stop and the officers’ actions afterward, not to that rumor.

Wow, State Troopers, Police, National Guard, Federal Agents, and US Marshals took over in SPITE of the DA, lousy prosecutors and bad judges. Fantastic.

Yeah, but the stuff in the second sentence has to be done from the state level. Good luck getting anything like that accomplished in a hard-blue state like California or Illinois, where the state-level pols and law enforcement are as bad or worse than the city.

The deep blue state people can keep killing themselves as far as I’m concerned.

All for naught if the DA dismisses most of them.

You call “Murders down 47% - Carjackings down 48% - Robberies down 51%. - Vehicle theft down 80%”, naught?

And it took Trump to do it.

Our feckless, useless Governor, Bill Lee never even tried.

I hope Blackburn will be better but I’m not confident.

Memphis and DC will likely revert to Marxist sh*thole status once Trump is out of office. Democrats love the crime and the GOP are a bunch of cowards.

The DA should live in mortal fear every second of every minute of every hour of every day.

Don’t care if you call it “Karma” or “Ya reap what ya sow”; the label doesn’t alter the fact that it’s an immutable Law Of The Universe. What goes around comes around and this DA can’t escape the footsteps of Eternal Justice closing in from behind.

“Our feckless, useless Governor, Bill Lee never even tried.”

Just like CA, OR, WA, IL, NY, MA, MD and many other blue states. It’s disgusting how all of these blue state governors and blue city mayors deride and ignore public safety and protect and coddle criminals.
