Two months ago, the Iranian regime was at its most perilous state since it came to power in 1979...But excitement among regime opponents abroad over the prospect of its downfall quickly turned to horror as the Islamist theocracy launched a brutal crackdown, killing as many as 30,000 protesters, according to some counts.
While airstrikes and targeted killings of leaders have weakened the regime materially, they may also be reinforcing its internal cohesion, hardening its capacity for repression, and exposing the absence of any credible political alternative...If the Islamic Republic is to fall — with a more welcome replacement taking power — it will require addressing all three factors.
Historically, mass protest alone is not enough to bring about a political revolution — what matters more is whether popular unrest translates into cracks within the ruling regime itself. Otherwise, the united rulership tends to suppress opposition...
"The war has created a new situation in which the leaders of the government and the military are more closely united than at any time..in the last dozen years… anybody who had a moderate position or who advocated negotiation has essentially had the ground cut from under them.”
"NATO’s 2011 intervention in Libya provided air cover for rebels to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi, but in that case, military forces had partly defected...In Iran, no such conditions exist."
"Even if the Islamic Republic is further weakened, the central question surrounding regime change is not military but political. Beyond degrading Tehran’s military capabilities, neither Israel nor the US has identified a clear alternative ready to replace it."

Complete garbage. Yep, clown world writing such tripe.
From the article:
According to Jack A. Goldstone, Hazel professor of Public Policy at George Mason University:
“The war has created a new situation in which the leaders of the government and the military are more closely united than at any time..in the last dozen years… anybody who had a moderate position or who advocated negotiation has essentially had the ground cut from under them.”

This 180 degrees out from what we’ve been told. The story is that the IRGC and the Iranian supreme leadership are completely at odds with the Iranian military and government.
That seems like a job for the Iranians.
Anyone seen the Big Mo?
You can count on the Left to constantly come up with alternative scenarios to uphold their failed assumptions about reality.
It is easy to do. Find a situation. Write your story in such a way so as to make the result fit the current or hoped for situation.
Never acknowledge mistakes.
I think it is called cognitive dissonance.
Are you speaking from experience?
Look what Lindsey tweeted today :). Someone got the memo!
"Keep it up Mr President. Wind down the war and wind up efforts for an historic peace deal." @LindseyGrahamSC
“could be” = wish it were true
lol
Total BS . If the IRGC and Basij are still able to intimidate and suppress the Iranian population after weeks of bombing, the killing of pretty much the entire Islamic State leadership, the destruction of IRGC bases and the killing of tens of thousands of their corps, what chance would theIranian people have had with a little economic strife.
Yeah. They’re even more united in their mass graves under tons of rubble.

Just because you in your all knowing wisdom from on high can’t be bothered to offer a cohesive opposing viewpoint or cite contradictory facts does not make the article complete garbage.
And just what would the motive be for the Times of Israel and the author to engage in “clown world” writing?
Condoleezza Rice I'm aware does support the current war effort.
This article serves up the old tropes - we want a collapse of Iran, and total regime change. All of Iran will rally around the flag. To get this change, we must invade the country.
Trump doesn’t want regime change, nor does he want a collapse of Iran and he will not conduct an invasion.
He wants a more rational and sensible faction to take power. And once they do, even with a slight opening to the West, there will be NO going back for Iran’s society.
The USA and Israel may have already identified a more sensible faction. We simply don’t now.
Fair perspective thank you. The question is how much Trump’s ‘reasonable’ objectives clash with the more bloody vision of some in his cohort who are doing everything they can to call the shots.
lol!
This article is hot garbage. Lies.
This inference the headline tries to get one to get (and probably you as the poster as well) is that this regime was on the brink but for this current conflict. Of course the article itself doesn’t relay that - it relays that it was on the brink during the huge uprising then they slaughtered 30,000+ in cold blood and have imprisoned and killed quite a few more since then.
It is unfortunate the assets were not in place to launch these strikes around the same time as the popular uprising - the regime would have indeed been in a much more perilous situation.
