Somalis Fled Civil War and Built a Community. Now They Are a Target.
The New York Times ^ | Jan. 11, 2026 | Jazmine Ulloa and Campbell Robertson

On an icy Friday morning, Mahad Omar watched armed federal agents run down the street and tackle one of his neighbors to the ground. They handcuffed the man and put him inside a black-tinted S.U.V.

Mr. Omar, 28, an Uber driver, immigrated to Minneapolis from Somalia two decades ago. He had never imagined seeing something like that in his community. “Minneapolis is a great city,” Mr. Omar said after the agents had left and residents emerged from their homes to discuss in hushed voices what they had seen from their yards and windows. Several women wept.

“It’s never been like this,”said Mr. Omar, one of thousands of Somalis who fled civil war in their country and came to the United States through a federal refugee program, many of them settling in Minnesota.

Cities around the country have taken their turn in the glare of President Trump’s immigration enforcement campaign, and now Minneapolis is the focus. The federal crackdown, triggered in large part by a viral video purporting to show widespread fraud at Somali-run day care centers, is concentrated among the city’s Somali-Americans.

Somali residents, lawmakers and civic leaders in Minneapolis and beyond say they have been accustomed for decades to being treated with suspicion for being Black, immigrant or Muslim. But the disparagement from Mr. Trump and his allies, both in his first term and now, has solidified into a more direct rhetorical attack on them. Now, many said, they feel targeted simply for being Somali.

“Maybe they got tired of attacking Muslims,” Imam Yusuf Abdulle, director of the Islamic Association of North America, which oversees more than three dozen Islamic centers and groups across the country. “Now, they have another name, another reason,” he said, citing Vice President JD Vance’s use of the words “the Somali problem.”

It’s kind of sad. I’ve met Somali immigrants who are very patriotic and contribute to this country.

OK, then maybe they need to go back to Somalia where they won't be treated with suspicion for being capital-B black, immigrant or Muslim. And where graft, fraud and corruption are a way of living.

They did not "build a community"!!!! If there were kids in their "community" then the daycares would have had kids!!!

They are nothing but a well organized fraud ring under the guise of helplessness. Stealing is as much a part of their culture as baby-killing is to Dims. This is what happens when we insist that immigrants don't assimilate into our culture.

So why do they ignore and tolerate the theft and abuse of American goodwill so prevalent in their tribe? They know what’s going on from the inside out... and they know it’s wrong, too.

Community:
“A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.”

I guess that would mean a group of money launderers living in a foreign land taken care of by a corrupt group, with assurance that they don’t have to assimilate or contribute to the foreign country

A large percent do not have jobs outside of voting

They don’t need day care to begin with

Where was the congress appropriation group on this? A Republican Congress

But I think the Times means it as a euphemism.

They came here to vote Democrat and leech off the Govt, that is what they really want to say..I remember when Trump brought in South Africans who were being killed in South Africa, the commies were VERY upset, want to know why..they were WHITE and secondly they were less likely to rely on the Govt for anything and thus, vote Republican, cant have that

The legal ones are welcome to stay. The refugee ones are welcome to go home. The illegal ones are welcome to board the ICE C130 in shackles.

They built thir community with our money. What is it like 80% that still are living off our genorsity?

AI states the following:

The claim that 80% of Somalis in Minnesota live off government assistance is based on data from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), which reports that 81% of Somali immigrant households in Minnesota receive some form of welfare, including food stamps, Medicaid, and cash assistance.

This figure includes 54% receiving food stamps and 73% enrolled in Medicaid.

For Somali households with children, the rate rises to 89% receiving some form of public assistance.

So, quit gaslighting the citizens New York Slimes. As these figures are 10 years after yheir arrival here. They are not the productive people you are trying to make them out to be, Slimballs. We need to put the New York Times out of business for deceiving the people constantly.

So what was his neighbor’s name? I would like to know so we can look him up.

If the story was, “They ran down Ahab, and took him into custody…but released him because he was the wrong guy”, then I would have a modest amount of sympathy.

It is more likely, “Ahab was arrested because he was convicted of three felonies including drugs and sexual assault and there was a deportation order.”

I think knowing either of those things would make a story more relevant. They want us to care about these people because of what they are, not what they—as individuals—have done in this country.
