CNN Sports Analyst Refers to Tennis Star as American (She's a Japanese Citizen)

Pro Tip for CNN contributor Cari Champion: If you're going to criticize people who "don't really understand tennis," avoid making a glaring mistake of your own about the sport!

Appearing on Monday's CNN This Morning, former ESPN host Champion was discussing the ongoing U.S. Open and commenting on how, in her opinion, women players get treated more harshly when it comes to bad behavior on the court, Champion ripped people who comment on the matter but "don't really understand tennis."

But just moments later, Champion thrice alluded to Naomi Osaka as an "American" tennis player:

You know what I'm excited about? And when you talk about women's tennis, more specifically American women's tennis.. We have a new crop of women's tennis stars, American tennis stars. Coco Gauff by far is one of the best that we have in terms of eyes and people want to watch her. Naomi is making her comeback. I am looking for two huge superstars to take over that court and really give us our new world, our new era of tennis, meaning American tennis that's here to stay with some really dominant figures.

Cari Champion doesn’t strike me as the sharpest tool in the shed.

Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.

Does not matter if it is about doodle bug racing.

News should be accurate.

Osaka spends more time in America than Japan. Her dad is African American? I am okay if Naomi Osaka thinks she is American. It is a trivial issue. I am more interested in her tennis skills than her nationality.

Well, Osaka is American. She decided to play for Japan because her mother is Japanese. Her dad is American and pretty sure she was born here but at least was raised here.

Get used to this. If there’s no sports betting involved, the commentators won’t care to get a clue.

Naomi Osaka lives in California. She owns a home in Los Angeles and another in Beverly Hills.

She was born in Japan to a USA serviceman. That’s were her Japanese roots end. Her mother lives in the USA as well.

For most of her life, Naomi had dual citizenship in both the U.S. and Japan. However, in October 2019, Naomi relinquished her American citizenship. Though the decision allowed her to play for Japan in the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics, that wasn’t the main reason. Under Japan’s Nationality Act, those with dual citizenship must choose one before their 22nd birthday. Naomi’s decision to relinquish her US citizenship came six days before that deadline.

Thanks for the correction on her birth. I did hear her dad was American but maybe they meant American citizen because I’m pretty sure she grew up here.

I was curious because I’d heard her story when she cane on the tennis scene and I followed tennis so I looked up her bio. Her dad is Haitian-American—his parents lived in NY. Her Mom is Japanese and yes, Naomi was born there but cane to the USA at age 4 and grew up and trained here, mostly in LA. IIRC, the tennis sportscaster said she was American and I assumed from that they meant sge was a citizen because she’s been here most if her life, but, who knows.

I think that Japan is wise not to allow dual citizenship. Do they have any requirements about actually living in Japan?
