RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina House voted 72–48 on Tuesday to override Governor Josh Stein’s veto of House Bill 318, officially enacting the Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act. The controversial legislation mandates that sheriffs notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within two hours when releasing an inmate subject to an immigration detainer and requires a 48-hour hold for federal pickup. They also considered several other bills.
Republicans enacted a total of eight bills that Stein had vetoed. With each of those bills passed, support was secured from at least one Democrat in the House to meet the required supermajority threshold—some of the vetoed bills received support from multiple Democrats.
The override followed nearly 15 minutes of passionate floor speeches and public outbursts. But it was Representative Carla Cunningham (D-Mecklenburg) who commanded the floor with a forceful defense of her prior support for the bill, only to be interrupted by jeers from the gallery and a procedural challenge from a fellow Democrat.
Rep. Cunningham began her remarks with a personal appeal rooted in her identity as an American Descendant of Slavery (ADOS), arguing that unchecked immigration can destabilize vulnerable communities and that assimilation must be expected.

Sensible take for a Democrat.
Error? Should that be 15 HOURS of emotional debate? 15 minutes doesn’t sound too impressive
How did the governor justify vetoing this pro-American legislation?
“How did the governor justify vetoing this pro-American legislation?”
Not a hard question to answer - he’s a Democrat.
The HARDER question is why in hell are so many people in states like North Carolina SPLITTING THEIR BALLOTS to elect Democrat governors, but Republican legislatures? Do the voters in those states have ANY CLUE as to just who the Democrats are?
“North Carolina SPLITTING THEIR BALLOTS to elect Democrat governors, but Republican legislatures? Do the voters in those states have ANY CLUE as to just who the Democrats are?”
…Dems lie and cheat their way in. Ground game, as in lawn signs, makes a big difference as to repeatedly implant the name so like a robot, they vote. And most are pretty damn stupid and/or vote for “free” stuff.
Many in the South think of the Democrats as gentlemanly types. Those days are long gone.
No. Commie Josh vetoed it. Republicans overturned his veto.
Amazing, a sane Democrat...
The jeers were from the PEANUT GALLERY!!
Josh Stein, just the newest face to the “moderate” Democrat governors we’ve had since Jim Hunt.
Mike Easley
Barv Purdue
Roy Cooper
All leftists, 100% the time on anything that really matters.
“Republicans overturned his veto.”

And the state of North Carolina will be a lot better off for it. One step back from the cultural chaos and lawlessness that plagues some other states.
Not only take their jobs - but turn their living space into “Little Mexico” with businesses and signs all in Spanish and ESL classes using up precious educational dollars.
California is a good example of this as the “new” Spanish speaking invaders took over black sections of Los Angeles like Watts and Compton and pushed the blacks out - while politicians these people keep voting for like Maxine Waters stayed safe in their homes outside of the districts they represent- while continuing to claim to displaced, jobless blacks that the greatest threat to them is White Supremacist.
How can Democrooks win without illegal votes?
That's a good question that certainly applies here in Kentucky. We've had only 2-3 Republican governors in the last 120 years, but Trump won the state about 63-37 three times.
Now shove constitutional carry down Stein’s throat.
The reason Robinson was so weak, he is just a normal non-lawyer man who became famous but had skeletons in his closet. A lot of Stein's attacks fell short because what he accused Robinson of is a normal part of life for poor people. Thomas Sowell said poverty levels are a moving target, people move in and out of poverty. Have I ever written a rent check knowing the money would not be in the bank the day the check arrived, but the check would clear a couple of days latter, yea, I had no choice. Did I cash a check at a grocery store to feed my children knowing it would bounce, yes, I was desperate. I paid the $10 return check fee and made good on the bill on payday. Of course that immediately put me behind insuring more problems before the next payday. Such is life when you are poor, something a silver spoon baby like Stein never experienced. Eventually jobs improved and I got back on track. Those and a failed business were the subject of Stein's attacks until the porn accusations hit. That sunk Robinson. Wife Would not vote for him. Robinson was not a politician or a lawyer, he could have turned the accusation against Stein, but his weak efforts failed.
Ouch. I remember that myself. It sucks to be poor. It was best in the age before computers when
checks had to be physically moved around. If you had a bank account in a different Federal
Reserve District than your local bank, it usually bought you three days. (what was it called, "float"?). Technically it was a crime called "kiting". But it was unenforceable as long as the checks cleared.
Thank God that I've come a long way from those days. Thank you Father God. Your Glory, not mine.
