Cassidy launches Senate reelection bid while bracing for primary

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) formally launched his Senate reelection bid Friday as he braces for a potentially volatile primary next year.

“Louisiana and our country face serious challenges,” Cassidy is expected to say in his announcement, according to shared prepared remarks.

”I’m running for reelection to work with the people of Louisiana and my fellow Americans to not just face these challenges, but to make our state and our country even greater,” he will add.

Cassidy has looked to make amends with President Trump after he became one of seven GOP senators to vote to convict the president in his 2021 Senate impeachment trial after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

The two-term GOP senator has since tried to repair his relationship with the president, including backing some of Trump’s more controversial nominees, such as Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in his confirmation vote earlier this year.

More recently, Cassidy made several posts on X touting a White House health and tech event Wednesday, including one with a selfie of him at the event.

“Had a front row seat at yesterday’s Health Tech event at the White House. Let’s Make America Healthy Again!” Cassidy wrote.

Cassidy faces a number of challengers on his right, including Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming and state Sen. Blake Miguez, some of whom have criticized Cassidy for his vote to convict Trump in 2021.

Unlike in previous cycles where Senate candidates would compete in a “jungle” primary, Louisiana Senate candidates this year will run in separate GOP and Democratic primaries.

Freepers are adamant he is doomed because of the impeachment vote but I notice Cassidy is in OK shape: He has millions on hand and seems ready to fight the primary.

There is very little polling to go on...

Yes but I dont think he’s doomed.

He’s got campaign dollars, name recognition and he’s the incumbent. Interesting race.

He be doomed if we had a squeaky clean candidate. A lot of ammo for Cassidy to use. Will it work on voters? Time will tell.

Article makes it sound like he is a Trump supporter except for that one backstabbing impeachment vote. How about all the other tines he votes with Dems against Trump and the vast majority of Louisiana citizens?

“I notice Cassidy is in OK shape”

And how do you notice that Cassidy is in OK shape? Money? He will lose the primary; Republicans in Louisiana don’t care what amounts of money he has to campaign.

This will be his first Republican voting only primary. There will be no democrats crossing over to vote for him. He is finished.

I learned long ago never give to outfits instead give your money directly to the candidate. I really despise the congressional campaign funders. They do more damage than good as you’ve said.

Senister Assidy may be in good shape financially but that SOB is despised by a great many people here in LA. I only voted for him when he was running against Mary Landrieu, and I didn’t really care for the POS then. I haven’t voted for him since (I chose not to cast a vote for any senate candidate when he was the RINO on the ballot). The reason there are no polls on this race, I suspect, is because they would show him losing. If, by some miracle, Assidy wins the primary, I will not vote for him in the general.
