A major funding battle has erupted between the U.S. Navy and the White House over the future of naval aviation. The Trump administration has officially prioritized the Air Force’s F-47 sixth-generation fighter, arguing the U.S. industrial base cannot support the simultaneous development of the Navy’s F/A-XX program.

Is this going to be another expensive multi fighter like the F-35?
We could, if we weren’t $37 trillion in debt and hadn’t lost 96% of the dollar’s value due to inflation...
AVIATION PING!................
The days of the manned fighters is ending. It will all be drones in the future.
No more fighter tucks on the back of those lids, jocks.
Drones?
The future of warfare will be totally different from the present, not just with drones, but with waves of energy from light waves to radio waves to the entire spectrum.
So much will depend on delicate new technology and the disruption of that technology.
That's not good.
“Awarding the F/A-XX contract as written is likely to delay the higher-priority F-47 program, with low likelihood of improving the timeline to field a Navy sixth generation fighter.”
We basically have three major advanced aircraft suppliers to the military - Northrup -Grumman, Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
Northrup -Grumman is focusing on B-21 , Lockheed Martin has it's hands full with long delayed F-35 projects and upgrades that are behind schedule and are is not delivered on time and Boeing is working on a bunch of F-15 EX and the new F-47.
All have advanced drone projects in the works which is where the action is at.
The Trump Admin is racing to re establish deterrence against the increasingly hostile and well equipped Chinese and they wish to get capabilities in service ASAP to divert Chinese military spending to defensive instead of offensive systems.
The Obama and Biden years were very , very good for the Chinese when it came to theft of military technology and we have a lot of catching up to do.
The Navy, for their part, has a lot of boxes to check before they can field a front line 6th gen carrier capability and that has to do with a lot more than aircraft.
The Navy is still working to integrate 5th F-35s into their system and they really need to work on much neglected force protection before they can take advantage of 6th gen aircraft.
Respectfully, I think you may be overestimating the missions that a fully-autonomous drone can actually accomplish. The Navy has experimented with fully autonomous aerial tanking. They could probably do Airborne Early Warning, too. But probably not (unmanned) Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS). That’s about it. All the most important work appears to be with the “Loyal Wingman” concept where the manned aircraft is acting as a network node for a flight of unmanned aircraft.
I confess that I have no first-hand information to go on either, but the subject interests me and that’s the conclusion I have drawn.
We could, if we weren’t $37 trillion in debt and hadn’t lost 96% of the dollar’s value due to inflation..

…..and paying ( wasting) $$$$$ 1 trillion a year in interest ( debt) payments a year…and rising. All nations eventually collapse due to unpayable debt which is unsustainable….just a matter of time.
I remember the days when Defense contracts were commonly cancelled due to debt and lack of funding, today Congress just keeps printing and borrowing….a fools game….the clock is ticking.
Thanks for a well thought out reply.
I think its because they can’t use new numbers. What about an F-ϖ?
Sulking.
“and hadn’t lost 96% of the dollar’s value due to inflation...”
Not a factor as the payment is made with inflated dollars.
A fighter suitable for the Air Force would be wholly inadequate for carrier duty.
“Congress just keeps printing and borrowing….a fools game….the clock is ticking.”
The BBB is projected to run a surplus.
And DOGE cuts are just starting.
