CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said on Wednesday that legal immigrant voters are in favor of President Donald Trump’s hawkish immigration policies.
Foreign-born citizens have moved to support the political right’s views on immigration, with the Republican Party currently holding an eight-point lead on the question of who is more trusted on immigration policy, Enten said on “CNN News Central,” citing his own aggregate data. In 2020, the Democrat Party held a 32-point lead among this demographic on the same question.
“Immigrant citizens, immigrant voters and foreign-born voters have gone tremendously to the right on this issue in 2024 and 2025 versus where they were in 2020,” Enten said. “If you go back to 2020, Democrats get this, they held a 32-point lead on this issue. Immigrant voters were in the Democratic camp. Jump forward to 2024 and 2025, look at that shift! A 40-point shift toward the right among immigrant voters. Republicans now lead on this issue by eight points over Democrats, more than any other group that I could find. The group of voters who became more hawkish on immigration were in fact immigrants themselves, immigrants who are registered to vote in this country.”
Trump earned a significantly higher percentage of the vote among immigrant citizens, jumping from 36% in 2016 to 47% in 2024, according to Enten’s aggregate data.
“There may be all this stuff right now on undocumented immigrants and Trump being harsh on them. But immigrant voters have increasingly like Donald Trump and have increasingly moved to the right on immigration into the Republican camp,” Enten continued.
Immigrant voters have shifted their opinions to hold a negative view of illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants’ net favorability rating among legal immigrants stands at -6 points in 2025 after it had been 23-points above water in 2020.

Unexpected.
The Democrats will continue to oppose Trump. They feel they must always oppose him.
The Media (because they are Democrats) will also continue to oppose Trump. But, in a sane world, people in the News Business would focus on reporting the “News” that the American people strongly support the president, and they would also be mindful of their “Business” and provide reporting that didn’t insult the intelligence of the American people. But, since the News Business is not about the News and is not really a Business, the Media will just continue to oppose Trump. They feel they must always oppose him.
This sentiment of legal immigrants has been suppressed for years.
They made a commitment to do it right and are appalled by the political games.
I know a Vietnamese woman who brought her younger sister to the USA, to help in her small business - and she admits, to also find the woman a husband, because she says Vietnamese men are lazy and entitled momma’s boys — which surprised me
It took 10 years, countless visits to the US Embassy, health tests, and $thousands of legal fees before the sister received a visa.
So my friend hates taxes, hates illegals and loves Trump. So this CNN comment does NOT surprise me.
CNN always seems to be shocked, surprised and, yes, STUNNED when indications are that the vast majority of Americans aren’t really all that in favor of never-ending, unmitigated, complete BS.
This is really a stupid ‘duh’.

(ps...I’ve always wondered where all the mexicans get the $$ to buy food trucks, restaurants and houses for daycare (the latter a BIG business in my area)...and whether anyone’s tracking them for payroll tax payments etc.)
I would think that people who immigrated here legally would be much more likely to be against illegal immigration because they know what it takes to become a citizen. I imagine they don’t like the idea that other people come here and don’t go through the process they had to go through.
My daughter-in-law recently got her green card. It was a very long process after she married my son (two years) and very expensive. I had to write a letter confirming that they really did have a relationship. She had to have all kinds of medical tests. Whenever I hear about people coming here without going through this, it really irks me.
They think they can fool all of the people all of the time.

They had a good thing going. New country. Several advantages. People liked them.
And then these < removed to save the moderator the trouble > show up from the place you left and start trashing your nice new home. And you get a tarred with the same brush.
Of course they are upset. Of course they want those... people... sent back to where they came from.
Why is this a surprise? I went through the long legal process to change from student visa to permanent resident visa. Why would I be okay with people who jumped ahead of the line?
Exactly. They dutifully jumped thru the required hoops and resent the scofflaws. Heck, over forty years ago I heard the very same complaints from my college classmates from India.
I’ve heard similar stories from German & Argentine friends.
Spent years and years and thousands of dollars trying to get illegal immigrate status. Treated like criminals.
Then they see how those who just walked across the border given cash, phones, healthcare, accommodations, transportation….
They’re as outraged as I am.
Unexpected? Why? These people followed the law. They spend money and time to come legally and work towards citizenship. They do not want others to get the benefit when they did not follow the law!
Harry Enten is at the point he is almost cheering for Trump. He just loves the numbers.
What President Trump is doing is ramping up the intensity of the raids in order to motivate people to self-deport using the CBP One app that will preserve their ability to reenter the United States legally.
If they are swept up in a raid and deported, they will lose the possibility of ever returning to the United States legally. People who have court dates and are regularly checking in with ICE but get swept up in a raid and detained, will eventually be released.
But the rest of the illegal immigrant community should be afraid and should consider self-deporting for the sake of their families.
