84 years ago today, Bob Dylan was born. At his Nobel Prize winning best, from 1961 to 1966, he challenged us to rethink everything with everything he wrote.
Donald Trump, born about 5 years after Dylan, in 1946, looks to me like he is just entering into a period of his Dylanesque best. Trump forces us to revealuate this modern world all the time.
Bob Dylan mastered and elevated American music twice to great literature in a few short years, first as a folkie but then as a great rock n roller. Potus 45 surprised everyone to come down a golden elevator and beat the former First Lady in 2016. In 2024, Trump was the victim of unrelenting lawfare but still beat the ridiculously senile Biden in debate and then beat the diversity hire Kamala Harris at the polls. (Dylan almost prophesied this: “Now all the authorities/They just stand around and boast/How they blackmailed the sergeant-at-arms/Into leaving his post/And picking up Angel who/Just arrived here from the coast/Who looked so fine at first/But left looking just like a ghost” from Just Like Tom thumb’s Blues, 1965)
With Trump, America has, finally, succeeded, metaphorically, in both 2016 and 2024, in electing Archie Bunker president. (Dylan: “The city fathers they’re trying to endorse/The reincarnation of Paul Revere’s horse/But the town has no need to be nervous” from Tombstone Blues, 1965)
“You’re fired.” Trump said one by one to many, many people across fifteen seasons of The Apprentice. (Dylan: “……. in comes Romeo, he’s moaning/“You Belong to Me I Believe”/And someone says, “You’re in the wrong place my friend/You better leave …….” from Desolation Row, 1965)
Happy Birthday Bob.
Thank you, Bob, for showing us how to be free.
And thank you, POTUS 45 and 47, for making freedom fun again.

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea he was 84.
One of my all time favorite songs is:
Lilly, Rosemary, & The Jack Of Hearts.
Enjoy

An interesting take.
I’m glad this wasn’t about Mulvaney. (no pics please)
You misspelled psychotic.
gosh i still like that song: If Not for You. Olivia Newton-John from your neck of the woods did a great cover. great pop/rock song from a folkie. Zimmerman is a very talented song smith.
Bob was a hero of my two musical heroues, Al Stewart and Harry Chapin. Happy 84th Bob! 😁
The most influential fellow Gemini in my life. Saw him as an all acoustic folk performer and on the very first electric tour (with boos from the crowd). The drummer said “Anyone on that first electric tour saw history. He was creating the new sound of popular music for the future on that tour.” Was one of the lucky people to see him on the 1974 comeback tour which had over 20 million people in the US attempt to get tickets. 40 sports arenas sold out. Mafia was in control of the scalping in Michigan and Bill Graham went onstage to announce the scandal. My wife and I (girlfriend then) were in the audience.
When I bought his second album back then I would have never dreamed he would be 84 now and I’ll be 79 shortly. Have 100% of the songs and bootlegs and interview CDs. Have over 100 books about him (counted them last year so have more now.)
May God bless him with more life.
I don’t think so.
Dylan at 84 isn’t pretty.
But then Dylan at 20 wasn’t either.
But his works are.
AMEN!
From a fellow Gemini and also soon to be 79 y.o.

I saw him in concert in the 60’s at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall. He had the audience in his hands. He moved one slightly and the entire hall went silent. Respect like I’ve never seen at any other concert. Deeply impressed. Loved him from his first album.
I don't know if he is or not, but I hope he has a better singing voice.
He’s never tried to be frank sinatra nor Perry comp. In fact he praises Perry comp as well as Ricky nelson. He said Ricky Nelson had a calm voice. He covered Ricky Nelson song just two weeks ago live in San Diego
He’s not about crooning or putting out a great rock epic
Listen to this cover It’s not about quality of crooning.
And he hits every note, as always

The song our masters didn’t want us to hear:
I will not go down under the ground
’Cause somebody tells me that death’s comin’ ’round
An’ I will not carry myself down to die
When I go to my grave my head will be high
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground
There’s been rumors of war and wars that have been
The meaning of life has been lost in the wind
And some people thinkin’ that the end is close by
’Stead of learnin’ to live they are learnin’ to die
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground
I don’t know if I’m smart but I think I can see
When someone is pullin’ the wool over me
And if this war comes and death’s all around
Let me die on this land ’fore I die underground
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground
There’s always been people that have to cause fear
They’ve been talking of the war now for many long years
I have read all their statements and I’ve not said a word
But now Lawd God, let my poor voice be heard
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground
If I had rubies and riches and crowns
I’d buy the whole world and change things around
I’d throw all the guns and the tanks in the sea
For they are mistakes of a past history
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground
Let me drink from the waters where the mountain streams flood
Let the smell of wildflowers flow free through my blood
Let me sleep in your meadows with the green grassy leaves
Let me walk down the highway with my brother in peace
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground
Go out in your country where the land meets the sun
See the craters and the canyons where the waterfalls run
Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho
Let every state in this union seep down deep in your souls
And you’ll die in your footsteps
Before you go down under the ground
47 is Trump’s Sgt. Pepper. /s
I’d like to see Trump open his rallies with Dylan’s version of “The Times, They Are a Changing”
Trump is more punk than Dylan.
“hope he has a better singing voice.”
Dylan could actually sing rather well, for evidence I submit the song Lay Lady Lay. He said if people were listening to his voice they weren’t listening to the words and message. He also said he was just trying to make it rhyme, so there’s that. It took me a long time to figure out that if you base everything on your personal philosophy, you’re going to miss out on a lot of great things. Dylan is likely a liberal but he still wrote some of the greatest songs ever. I have great admiration for a local girl named Dolly who has never, and will never, reveal her politics because it would piss off half her audience. As for Trump’s taste in music I understand it’s very broad spectrum.
