U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins took bold action to protect America’s food supply and ranching industry from an imminent biological threat.

Effective immediately, all live cattle, horse, and bison imports through U.S. southern border ports of entry have been suspended in response to the reemergence of the New World Screwworm.

The New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is a parasitic fly whose larvae (maggots) are flesh-eating parasites that infest warm-blooded animals, including cattle, wildlife, pets, and humans. It is considered one of the most destructive parasites known to livestock.

I can remember screw worms infesting some of our cattle when i was a child. It was gross, and would kill the animal if not treated fairly quickly, and sometimes lost them even with treatment. I don’t remember what we used to medicate them with, though. It might have been the old Black leaf 40 that we also used for chicken mites.

The Screw worm menace was minimized by subjecting their eggs to ionizing radiation. It made them sterile. They then drop these sterile flies and the healthy ones that mate with them lose their opportunity to replicate. To this day those sterile eggs continue to be dropped in Panama to prevent any migration up North.

This is really serious. Mexico has been dragging its heels for years and the screw worm plague has been creeping North over the last few years. Coupled with the down sizing of the beef herds, (drought, artic freeze kills, etc) there will be a real tight market for beef ... but drastic if the screw worm get up here.
