In the United States, Tuesday, April 15 was the deadline for filing federal, state and local income tax returns. Some Americans owed money by April 15, while others are expecting refunds.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is processing millions of federal tax returns. But according to Politico reporters Sophia Cai and Benjamin Guggenheim, the IRS may have a greatly reduced workforce in the future. And Politico's reporting is receiving a lot of discussion on X, formerly Twitter.
Cai and Guggenheim, in a mid-April article, explain, "The IRS could see a mass exodus of up to 40 percent of its workforce through a combination of buyouts offered by the Trump Administration and widespread layoffs, according to an internal memo obtained by Politico. The memo outlines the agency's plans to reduce its workforce to between 60,000 to 70,000 employees, down from a previous headcount of roughly 100,000. Notices of 'reductions in force' will start going out this week, the memo says, specifying that 'taxpayer services and compliance will need to be trimmed.'"
The IRS is among the many U.S. federal government agencies being targeted for mass layoffs by the Trump Administration and the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

I’m of concerned one bit. Most returns are processed by computers, and when they here are no math errors or obvious problems it’s automatic.
Ok, let’s think about this for a moment. This is 2025, why do we NEED tens of thousands of physical IRS Agents to chase and hound tax scofflaws to get them to pay like it’s 1940. Everything is digital, I can’t make a purchase online, buy property or a car or deposit five dollars in the bank without some government agency knowing and tracking it. Somebody doesn’t pay their taxes, hit a few keys on a keyboard (or not even that it could all be automated) and put a lien against their property or bank accounts, or garnish their wages for the amount. Sure, there are probably some people out there that can somehow manage to survive “off the grid” and deal only in cash for everything, but I’m guessing these IRS Agents aren’t busting their butts to track them down anyway as it’s too much real work.
I personally adhere to a modified mantra from the Dems...”Vote early, vote often” for me is: File early and file often. ;)
The best damn thing to do is abolish the whole freakin IRS once and for all..come on do it already
Less people can lead to efficiency improvements. Like in the real world, when you have the same work with less people, the smart ones will find a way. Oops, I see a flaw in my plan. I am not sure the IRS or most of government knows how to make things more efficient.
A 40 percent ‘mass exodus’ means a 40 percent increase in savings for tax payers.
Politico is still mad that President Trump has not continued the Politico subscriptions funded through the USAID money laundering scheme.
THIS is the answer.

For the last 14 years I always have to pay. In the mean time I keep my money for investing and saving during the year.
Repeal the 16th amendment, go withe tariffs and excise taxes.
Then you don’t need an IRS.
Beauty of it is, with tariffs is EVERYBODY pays, so all citizens will worry about taxes. So the baby momma with six kids, that never met a tax she didn’t like is now a contributor.

This is a good people vs overbearing and complicated government problem. Good people want to obey the law and file and pay their taxes or get a refund. But the regulations are so damn complicated they need help. They call the IRS and the IRS cannot help. Go hire an expert for $2000+ they say. Ridiculous. If I had a problem with anyone else - my trash service, by cell phone service, my internet service, my need for goods and services from almost any private entity except for some insurance companies lol - they will try to help resolve the problem or otherwise work something out.
I know government is not a private company but they can certainly adopt some of the characteristics of them. We don’t need even 20,000 IRS employees if they just made it simple. And no I don’t want an IRS at all but even if I agreed to have one it should just be “a postcard” for everyone and every small business.
the VAST majority of what the IRS does could be computerized. I file my return online, pay my taxes online, and never talk to a single person. I realize there are people who have to deal with them, and for them, a person might be good. But I would contend that’s the exception and that most people just file, and use the website or ARU to check on their return.
Why’s there any need for alarm? WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE DO?
