A polar vortex sent a wave of very cold air over much of the US for the next few days. This includes Washington, DC. By inauguration day below freezing temperatures were expected near the Capitol where the ceremony is traditionally held. This forecast persuaded President-Elect Donald Trump to move the ceremony indoors.
"On such a joyous occasion I don't want to see people have to run a guantlet of cold and snow just to be present at this historic moment," Trump said. "Expecting the tens of thousands of law enforcers, first responders, police K9s and horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters to sit or stand outside for many hours on the 20th is unreasonable."
Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei lamented "we have spent the last six months infiltrating our assassins into the United States through the borders President Biden so kindly left open for us. His exemption of nearly 7000 foreign nationals from terror-related entry restrictions into the US has been extraordinarily helpful. Trump's decision to move the inauguration indoors messes up all of our plans. The weapons we have so carefully acquired and smuggled to a safe house near the Capitol will be rendered useless. Our snipers will have no clear line-of-sight to their target. Our suicide bombers will never get past the armed security and into the Capitol. Trump has thwarted us again. Is there no way we can outwit this evil genius?"
Well, this is no satire -— Iran experienced a devastating blizzard in February 1972. This blizzard is considered the deadliest in history, resulting in the deaths of over 4,000 people.
The storm lasted from February 3 to February 9, 1972, and dumped up to 8 meters (26 feet) of snow across northwestern, central, and southern Iran. Entire villages were buried under the snow, and the extreme cold made survival nearly impossible for many.
