WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mourners who had gathered at the National Cathedral on Thursday to say goodbye to former President Jimmy Carter came away comforted after Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood sang a song about how there's no heaven, religion is a lie, and everything is ultimately meaningless.
The song, "Imagine" by John Lennon, known for its pleasant melody and nihilistic lyrics, is routinely played in Times Square on New Year's Eve as an appeal to world peace in a time of crisis, or to celebrate another year of debauchery, one of the two. Experts described the song as most suitable for use at a funeral, however, because the comforting lyrics remind people what really matters: absolutely nothing.
"I guess nothing matters and Jimmy Carter is gone forever," said one attendee. "Such a comforting thought."
Among the attendees were all five living presidents, with several of them hit hard by the loss of Carter because it forced them to confront their own mortality. But the uplifting song reminded them there was "nothing to live or die for" in the world so nobody cares.
"I cannot think of a more appropriate song for a state funeral," said former President Bill Clinton. "It washed my tears right away. Not that I had any. I barely knew John. I mean Jimmy."
"We're all worm food in the end," said George W. Bush. "Let us eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die. I read that somewhere. MAD Magazine, I think."
At publishing time, Garth Brooks denied ever playing "Imagine" at the funeral, stating it was actually Chris Gaines.
“Imagine” is the Communist Manifesto set to music.
I have loathed that screed since the first time I heard it.
Beautiful music, poisonous lyrics.
I can only hope Carter did not actually request this, but rather his aides and family under his name. Otherwise, what a final confession of faith. Or should I say, faithlessness.
Odd choice of song for Carter who purported to be an evangelical Christian. Maybe he dropped the pretense and went full commie at the end.
I like that song, but maybe not appropriate at a funeral, particularly for someone very religious like Carter. “imagine there’s no heaven, imagine there’s no hell”, “no religion too”.
Interesting Carter was a strong Baptist and the funeral was at an Episcopal cathedral.
I ranted somewhere on here the minute the folk singer began the song; it immediately desecrated any Christian sense to the funeral and its location.
After yesterday, and the people that were there and the music, the cathedral needs an exorcist to clear out all the demons that were let in.
A teacher played this song for a project when I was in 8th grade and the students were to write down what It makes us think of.
I wrote that it reminds me of filthy stinking hippies...that was it.
Teacher was not pleased.
I was not even aware of my political leanings at the time.
Indoctrination fail!!!
This in 1978
Imagine is the national anthem of the commie left. You don’t think they’d play “God Bless the USA”.
Why not ‘Dust in the Wind’?
The first thing I thought after I heard the song was that it was an old Beetles song. I guess you could read anything you wanted to into the words. It’s not what I would want played at my funeral. A friend of mine tried tried to explain that someone could “imagine” this if they wanted. Yes, but that would not make it truth. I’ve always had mixed feelings on Carter, but never cared for him as a president.
Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy till you die;
No hell below us, Above us, only sky;
Imagine all the people, Livin’ for that lie, A-haa.
Imagine there’s no countries, So there’s more drugs to do.
Nothing to live or die for, And no religion, too.
Imagine all the people, Livin’ for my lie.
You may say I’m a dreamer, But I’m not the only one, I hope someday you’ll join us, So the devil will have won.
Imagine no possessions, I’ll wonder if you can.
But buy my music, Oh brotherhood of man!
Imagine all the people Paying for my $ongs.
You may say I’m a dreamer, But I’m not the only one.
I hope someday you’ll join us, Cause' in Hell you can't run.

A friend of mine tried tried to explain that someone could “imagine” this if they wanted. Yes, but that would not make it truth. It is not what I would imagine, but as they say...It’s a free country. I’ve always had mixed feelings on Carter, but never cared for him as a president.
John Lennon, when asked about the meaning of the lyrics, said exactly that. He clarified that he wasn't as much a Communist as a "British Socialist" (not that it makes a heck of a lot of difference).
When I read that they sang that at Carter's funeral my reaction was "Are You F'ing Kidding Me????"
I’ve read many parodies of “Imagine” but I think yours is the best yet!
“I can only hope Carter did not actually request this,”
I’m going with saying there’s a 95% chance he did. He was a low IQ person and probably had no clue about its meaning. He just liked the tune.
I can not imagine Jimmy Carter, leader of Sunday school classes for years, would allow this... bet he didn't know about it.
Communism is really well crafted and very deadly-toxic.
John Lennon was not really a good person, sad to say.
I have always loathed the man from his first appearance, Nixon was a much better President.
You bunch of lame-brained, dumb-oxen! This is from the BEE! apparently some of you do not read the source of the article! ROFL
It’s the Bee, but they really did play that song at his funeral.
