SSN(X): The U.S. Navy’s Next Generation Submarine Is in Zombie Land

The U.S. Navy has big plans for modernizing existing major end items. The maritime branch is excited about the next-generation DDG(X) destroyer and the F/A-XX next-generation fighter jet. Now, the SSN(X) futuristic submarine that will replace the Virginia-class boats is experiencing delays. The SSN(X) may not come to fruition until the early 2040s, which is hard to fathom. Who knows what the U.S. military will look like in two decades?

We really do need attack submarines. And, sadly, we don't seem to be able to get oursevlves together to get them built. Russia and China seem to have this locked down.

Russia and China DO NOT have this locked down...China’s newest submarine sank at the pier this summer and the entire Russian Navy is in disarray.....We definitely have lost our way on shipbuilding but proper management and stable funding would fix it.

There are only two types of ships ... submarines and targets. We need more of one and less of the other. When I rode boomers back in the 70s, there were 41 SSBNs. Now there are 14. We have 54 fast attacks now when we used to have over 100.
