The destruction of college football appears to be complete, a QB from Holy Cross who was a multi-year starter and put up great numbers running and passing, decides to transfer to UNLV to play his final year at a higher level of college football. UNLV is 3-0 to start the season with a big Mountain West Conference game scheduled for this Saturday, the transfer QB decides to QUIT and hints promises about his NIL payments did not come thru, by quitting before the 4th game the player preserves his Red Shirt year and can transfer to another school to play next season.

It’s been confirmed by multiple sources that he had received only $3000. The calendar dictated his move to exercise his redshirt.

Reasonable given how the system works now. People calling him a quitter would do the same — at least I hope so.

College football players deliver value to their schools and should be paid accordingly.

Well, that horse has left the barn and they now get compensated.

College sports are a great hypocrisy. The schools and the coaches get rich. The “student athletes” are not educated and most leave school with life long debilitating injuries.

Mike Gundy is one of the few coaches to call a spade a spade.

I like Mike Gundy. Chris Peterson saw the handwriting on the wall concerning the crap that was coming and made a clean exit from coaching .

That part may be true, but what about the rest, could it have been paid out over the season, at season’s end, etc., my point is without a written contract we don’t really know what was told to him.

Think about it, if they shortchanged this guy, what about the other 80 plus guys on the team that haven’t quit, were they getting shortchanged or paid what was promised, you can be 100% for certain that other players on the team are getting paid something.

Given the money schools spend on recruiting HS athletes, I’m thinking he might not be seen as a quitter, but as a proven 3-0 veteran QB who can outplay a high school kid, even if for just one year.

Of course, he could always “transition” and be a big splash in the Lingerie League.

Someone will use this to continue the argument for player unions.

If true, and it probably is, he did the right thing and expose them. They might have a difficult time recruiting anyone of high caliber after this stunt.

I watched college football for about 60 years, it was a good run.

As the old Tallahassee band the Know-It-Alls once sang:

‘Don’t cry, don’t pretend to pretend
All good things, must come to an end’

- ‘Love Is Dead’

It’s already started. The Dartmouth basketball team voted 13-2 to join SEIU Local 560.

The future of what used to be amateur sports is definitely unionization.

“It’s just awful what they’ve done. I actually thought it was funny when my OU boys lost last week.”

I can sympathize with the plight OU fans.

The Sooners were once an elite program, are now on the trajectory of Nebraska, and are being left behind by the elite programs like Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, USC, and even Miami.

Don’t blame him. He should sue UNLV for the rest of the money. He’d likely win.

His QBR IS 27th in the country. A fairly low number of attempts per game, so I guess UNLV is probably more of a running team. Even then, his rushing stats are much better than most QBs.

Can’t believe there aren’t casino owners who can’t come up with the funds to pay the guy; or, maybe there’s another QB UNLV wants to play a lot more.

The guy made a wise business decision. Will be interested to see if UNLV comes up with the promised money before the next game. Still two more days if they are scheduled to play this weekend.

This will.definitely hurt recruiting.

Same for me with Pro Football. I watched it rabidly since 1971, and when they started endorsing the kneeling (and made it eminently clear they didn’t want people like me to watch) I cut ties.

I do watch occasionally with my best friend because he still watches (and it serves as an excuse for us to get together, which is important) but I don’t really care who wins or loses, and I never watch on my own anymore...or follow it at all.

there will some down and out program with a coach looking to save their job who will pay up an take a chance on the guy.

What NFL Free Agency and College Transfer Portal/NIL have proven is signing a bunch of free agents is not the long term way to go.

You can hit big like FSU did last year and go 13-1, all the big NIL transfers departed, and they are 1-3 to start the season, their HS recruiting has been subpar.

In the NFL, teams that sign a bunch of free agents year in and year out like the Jaguars end up being terrible more times than not.

The core of your team has to be HS players you develop and college players you draft and develop and keep long term.

Yep, the starting QB for Notre Dame, Sam Hartman, last year played for 6 years.

He played five years at Wake Forest (the NCAA decided that the Covid year doesn’t count, and he play played 4 games one year so he could be red shirted).

He then played all year for ND, but refused to play in the bowl game, not wanting to take a chance on the NFL draft.

More power to him. He was just your typical student athlete that transferred to ND for academic pursuits. /s.

I contend it’s not a wise decision, he could have played out the year, filed a lawsuit and get award damages if he wins, now he will be known as a quitter and have issues getting into a good program next season.

As I told another poster on FR, they’re over 80 other guys on the team, were they getting shortchanged as well, none of them have quit, either they are getting nothing which is highly unlikely, or they are getting paid what was promised.

Unless there is a written contract, we don’t really know the full story.

If his only responsibility is to himself...

Then why is he on a team...? 🤔
