This was a terrible tragedy, resulting from a series of bad decision, culminating in very bad judgment by the former deputy and the death of innocent Roger Fortson.

After an internal investigation by the Sheriff’s Department, Fortson was fired. I assume this means former Deputy Duran was fired.

Police need to show occupants that they are really police before the occupant opens the door. Running a siren and lights would be a good idea.
Never open your door to a stranger without first making sure of who and what he is.
We also need severe penalties for making false police reports (swatting).

Some very bad decisions on the part of both parties. Why open the door for a cop when you have a gun in your hand? Do you need to be armed in your own home? And all you nutjobs claiming " I got rights".. ya, in this case the guy was dead right.
2)..Why hire a person to be a cop that is scared to death of the general public?
3)unglued person one meet unglued person 2..
4)Shoot first ask questions later seemed to be the first thing in both men's minds. One of them was quicker on the draw.

Any time a uniformed “public servant” assaults someone, invades someone’s property, threatens someone, or in any other way violates that person, the “public servant” does so “WITH A DEADLY WEAPON”. Punishment of the criminal “public servant” needs to be adjusted accordingly.

That's how I open my door when not expecting someone, (like folks coming over for a Bible study, etc).

No search warrant? No arrest warrant? No exigent circumstances?
YOU DON'T HAVE TO OPEN THE DOOR.

So many questions from the title ...
How many airmen were shot? The title implies more than one.
Initially reading the title, I first assumed that it meant that the former deputy was shooting at airplanes (and the pilots) from his (the deputy's) home. From his front porch maybe?
Then I assumed that the former deputy had shot the airmen (plural?) in his (the deputy's) home ... like a home invasion?
I know .. I know .. I'm so easily confused these days.

Opening the door to your own home with a weapon ‘brandished’ and not brought to bear is foolish, no matter the details.
Regardless the officer’s poor decisions and the circumstances of his call to the address, there are lessons to be learned from such an encounter. Forston also made poor decisions (based upon the article details).
I mean, holy cow: A peephole is a lousy 5-10 bucks and wi-fi camera options start at under 20.

They need to find that person and charge him/her with 1st degree murder.

Poorly written headline, but yeah, this is not kosher.
Circumstances created a situation that wasn’t really good for anybody, but there is no law against answering your door with a firearm in hand.

As soon as I saw the video back when this happened I knew it was a bad shooting. That deputy must have had a severe itch in his trigger finger. There was absolutely no justification for his actions.
