What a freakin’ waste of my time.
My husband never became a Mason but he was in DeMolay as a teen. It was a refuge for him from his abusive home and alcoholic mother. It gave him a source of stability and educational opportunities and many lifelong friendships.
And when I was a kid, my father who was Catholic and never joined the Masons, but for a time considered it, worked for the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown PA in the early 70’s. We also lived on the campus in one of the older buildings that used to be one of the orphanages in the early 1900’s but the building had I think once been a private mansion in the mid 1800’s and had been converted to apartments for workers to live in rent free.
It was a cool place for a kid at my age. At the time in addition to the retirement homes, and a nursing home, it also had a boys and girls orphanage (it was just down the road from where we lived and I used to ride the school bus with them) and was almost entirely self-supporting with a dairy farm, poultry farm, pig farm, grew all sorts of crops, orchards, a commercial bakery and had a park with a koi pond and a movie theater free to employees.
I became friend with sisters who lived down the road and their father was the head cattleman and as a result I joined 4-H and was able to adopt a calf, learn all about dairy farming and would have shown her at the Farm Show had my dad not decided to take another job and we moved.
And some years ago I worked with a very devout Evangelical woman who had nothing but good things to say about the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia because of the free medical care they provided to her grandson who had a rare genetic condition that turned his muscles into bone (Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive), and one of the few hospitals that could care for him, his many surgeries, and again, totally at no cost.
Her small evangelical church told her she and her daughter were sinners for accepting care from a Masonic organization because they were "Satanists". *eyeroll*
