I am not a Swiftie. I can’t name a single song by Taylor Swift besides “Shake it off.” But a recent Newsweek column about her life choices has me infuriated.
John Mac Ghlionn opined that Swift is not a good role model. Why? Because she is 34, unmarried and childless.
…My 25-year-old daughter is set to be married in just a few months and I am so incredibly happy for her. She was lucky enough to meet a wonderful, respectful man with common interests and humor.
But let’s be clear. If she hadn’t, I would still be proud of a young woman working hard and finding her own way in life. I don’t care if she is married or has kids one little bit.
Let’s instead look at a person’s character when judging who is a role model.
Swift’s tour has been breaking records in every city. Her show literally is an economic boon to every city she visits.
But she also has donated to numerous important initiatives over the years, from food banks and libraries to paying off student loans and aiding tornado relief efforts. Just recently she gave around $5 million in bonuses to truck drivers on her tour...

I’ve got 4 kids from 22-11. They all despise Swift. Of course I have raised them right. Just a stupid and vapid singer and songwriter. Then there are other things to be concerned about in her lyrics and imagery.
Yes. The thread was unnecessary and has nothing to do with the important stuff that’s really going on in the world.
That was my point. Deal with it.
Her music is the same tired beat over and over again that couldn’t challenge someone with the intellect of a spoon.
I CANNOT stand her music, and I don’t understand why she’s so popular aside from thr fact that she’s nice to look at.
And it is cultism.
Just how is being a Satanist, abortionist, living in sin, LGBTQI promoter a bad role model?
..............................
Don’t forget she’s pro-Palestine, too.
Fat thighs.
Mairde, good to see your reasonable and reasoned response.
I knew nothing about this girl except that years ago she won an award and a black guy ran up on stage to holler at her during her acceptance speech.
Just recently I heard more about her and read that young kids really respond to her lyrics and can relate to her. So I went to youtube to hear some of her songs and read about her lyrics. I was impressed. I’d rather listen to Don Giovanni or Dire Straights or a few others but I think she’s very talented and I like to work out listening to one of her songs.
Wait, what? Other than his drunk act after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl ... is there a pattern here? Fill me in.
I suspect Swift herself is a high-functioning alcoholic as well. Just call it a hunch. A lot more of her songs mention alcohol and drinking than they used to so clearly, it's something that's important to her. She showed the world at the Superbowl that she can chug a full glass of beer like a pro.
I think her PR team has been pretty good at keeping the full extent of her drinking under wraps and out of the tabloids. Again, just a hunch. But to me, she definitely has alcoholic vibes.
Which, if as normative, and meaning fornicating and on contraceptives, is not a good role model.
Sorry but anyone who’s attacking her over politics is just silly.
She has endorsed a few folks here and there but hardly has she been out there pushing her political beliefs to her fans. If she wanted to she certainly could, but she is hardly a Bruce Springsteen or others.
Basically she is without any doubt the biggest and most successful pop star currently out there and like anyone who is that successful there will be those who just hate on them.
Like I said not a huge fan, but compared to the corporate boy bands I give her credit for actually being able to play instruments and write her own songs and build a multi decade career in pop music that started in her teens.
Not my kind of music, but Swift apparently is extraordinarily disciplined, reasonably talented, and hard-working. She's got "boy issues", but most of the celebrities from Hollywood's so-called Golden Age beloved by these grumpy geezers were worse . And she's managed not to have a drug problem, which seems almost a miracle nowadays. No arrests either.
Good for her. If kids go to her shows, dance, and have a good time, I have zero issues with it. A legit American success story.
I always refer to Taylor Swift as the “Complaining Girlfriend Singer” or the “I’m a Bad Girlfriend Singer.” Pretty much everyone under 40 gets who I’m talking about without me explaining it.
Sorry but if she was going to melt down, she would have already.
She has been making hits since she was like 15 or 16 years old. She’s not fallen into the trap of many kids who get success and fame and wealth at a young age. She is now 34 and after nearly 2 decades in the music industry she is without question the biggest star at the moment and she didn’t get three by fluke.
For the most part she seems far more down to earth than anyone who’s achieved such success particular so young when she started to be successful.
Hate on here generally just seems to be typical hate anyone successful seems to garner.
Not a huge fan of her music, but have certainly dealt with and hear far far worse by empty shills with absolutely not musical talent or ability over my lifetime. Who pretty much just marketed their sexuality and sang songs other people wrote and couldn’t play a note to save their lives.

Since we seem to have similar tastes in music, I’d be happy to listen to one of Taylor’s songs if you give me a suggestion.
Best, Mary
I love your enthusiasm and your reasonableness! Yeah for you!
Boy issues are there for every girl. It’s rather miraculous that people find someone compatible and that they grow together over the years. Add in money and fame and you get a large pool of possibilities with quite a few rotten apples that paint over their spots so it’s hard to tell in early days that it’s a relationship that won’t work out.
And even if it WAS a good relationship to start, pressures on both sides of work and exploitive friends make the relationship hard to maintain. She seems to have had relationships as long as some of my friends’ marriages, and I hope this current one works out for her. He wouldn’t be my choice, but I can only be grateful that everyone likes a different flavor of ice cream so that my raspberry-flavored husband was still available when I was out looking. 54 years and counting.
wealth at a young age?? Her father pulled down 30 million a year as an Executive V.P. at Morgan Stanley. Her mother made 5-10 million a year as a broker. She liked Christmas so much, they bought her a Christmas tree farm when she was like 5 years old. She refuses to discuss any of that in interviews. Shes had a problem keeping a boyfriend. Would get very offended if anyone asked about past boyfriends. She had this resurgence of her career because shes tapped into the older, “hate men” crowd. Now shes everywhere with this Kelce dork, hat on backwards, and making out in public like shes 15 years old. Shes on the wrong side of 25 and to single women, thats when they come unglued. Just watch...
Taylor Swift is a product. Sold and resold.
Go ahead name me a female pop star who broke out in their teens and didn’t go bat crap crazy with drugs or other issues I their 20s.
Madonna? Please
Brittany? Nope
Agulera? Nope
I don’t deny her parents are wealthy, but she’s handled her fame and fortune far better than any other person I can think of off the top of my head that’s had that kind of success at such a young age.
You seem to have a weird standard. “Can’t keep a boyfriend” seems a bizarre measuring stick.
At 34 she is hardly the only single woman out there, and frankly can’t imagine the pool of men that realistically would be able to date her as very high. John q Public is never going to be able to or want to be in the fish bowl that dating someone like her would be. And unless the man is independently wealthy as well, not likely going to be a successful match. So your pool if realistic suitors is going to be limited to wealthy men who are themselves also likely to have a pretty high level of fame as well. And even among that set, the overwhelming majority would end up playing second fiddle to Taylor at least in the public’s eye to Taylor. You know many young single men who are looking to be the Beta?
As to old woman man hating may want to actually look at the demographics of her fans, and of the music industry in general. You don’t get or stay on top of the popular music mountain for closing in on 2 decades pandering to bitter 30 and 40 somethings.
Not sure what your beef is, but clearly is something that has little to do with Taylor Swift herself.
SOMEone had to replace Bieber!
